What’s going on in the world?

     Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a set of procedures that intentionally alters or causes injury to the female genital organs by removing part of all of the external female genital. The reasons for this surgery have more to do with discrimination against women than medical reasons. The negative effects of FGM for girls and women are severe bleeding, problems urinating, cysts, and infections, as well as complications in childbirth and an increased risk of newborn deaths. In over 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, where the practice of FGM is concentrated, more than 200 million girls and women live with the after effects today. The procedure is done to young girls between the ages of infancy and 15-years-old. FGM is also considered to be a female circumcision. According to the UN, more than 27 million women were circumcised in Egypt and more than 98 % of all Somalis women were circumcised. FGM is now considered a violation of human rights for girls and women by the World Health Organization. I come from the Middle East where people strongly believe in female genital mutilation but I do not agree with this procedure or way of thinking.
