         <description><![CDATA[<div>John Reith (1889-1971) was the founder of the BBC.  He was its first general manager when it was set up as the British Broadcasting Company in 1922; and he was its first director general when it became a public corporation in 1927.  He created both the templates for public service broadcasting in Britain; and for the arms-length public corporations that were to follow, especially after World War Two. Reith fought off the politicians' attempts to influence the BBC, while offering the British people programmes to educate, inform and entertain.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;October 1922, the BBC started its first daily radio service in London – 2LO.&nbsp;<br>September 1923, The first edition of The Radio Times listed the few programmes on offer.<br>January 1927, The BBC is established by Royal Charter as the British Broadcasting Corporation.<br>November 1929, Using BBC frequencies, John Logie Baird broadcast some of his first experimental television broadcasts.<br>1934, The ‘Type A’, developed and refined over the years, has become the classic BBC microphone as seen in period dramas and films.<br>November 1936, The BBC was the first broadcaster in the world to provide a regular ‘high definition’ television service.<br>May 1937, the BBC took its cameras to the Coronation of King George VI and filmed its first outside television broadcast<br>January 1938,<br>First foreign language broadcast - Arabic.<br>October 1946, Woman's Hour - The first dedicated radio programme for women.<br>January 1948, News comes to the Television Service.<br>July 1948, The first televised Olympic Games.<br>July 1949, regular TV weather forecasts were revived.<br>May 1950, The Archers - the world’s longest running soap opera.<br>June 1555, The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was seen live on TV.<br>April 1958, The Radiophonic Workshop is established.<br>October 1958, Blue Peter starts its 50 year run.<br>June 1960, BBC Television Centre was the first purpose built television production centre in the world to be conceived.<br>November 1963, First episode of Doctor Who.<br>September 1967, Radio 1 goes live.<br>September 1974, CEEFAX (derived from 'see-facts') was the first teletext service in the world.<br>July 1981, Charles and Diana's wedding had an estimated global TV audience of 750 million.<br>January 1983, Breakfast Time – the UK’s breakfast TV service.<br>February 1985, EastEnders - the BBC's most watched programme ever.<br>November 1997, The BBC’s first rolling TV news service was launched as BBC News 24.<br>December 1997,&nbsp; bbc.co.uk is launched.<br>July 2007, BBC iPlayer – see what you want when you want.<br>November 2008, Red Button - extends television viewing.</div><div>July 2011, July 3D tennis - Wimbledon sees another 'first'<br>October 2012, Available across multiple platforms, BBC iPlayer Radio allows you to wake up to your favourite BBC station and listen on the move with a smartphone app. </div>]]></description>
