         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi, everyone! My name is Jessenia, though I prefer to be called Jess. I am originally from New Jersey, but I moved here to Florida when I was eleven-years-old. If I were to pick which is better, I would definitely say Florida. My neighborhood is gorgeous and I love my friends here. Even though my home campus is the Homestead campus, I attend MDC at North. It is a longer trip, but I am in the Honors College here at North and I would not trade it for the world. I am on the pathway to becoming an English major, as writing is my passion. I love to write, read, and analyze texts. This is why I hope to become a book editor when I graduate. Books and music have been a great love of mine for as long as I can remember, and I have my mother to thank for that. She would always read to me and show me all kinds of music that I have grown to love. While humanities are my specialty, sciences are not. I am excited to see in which ways this course will challenge me.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This world, and the people in it, are crazy. There is a lot of stuff that happens and is displayed on the news, and they can be misinterpreted and/or misunderstood easily. That is why the lecture in this video is useful when dealing with the news. if people can observe what is happening beforehand, that can stop them from making incorrect assumptions. After they have<br>observed all that is happening is when they can make their claim, whatever it is. Then, once a claim is made, they can find their evidence, making sure it is credible and that there is a sufficient amount. Finally, with all of their observations and evidence, they can state their reasonings as to why their evidence supports their claim to further strengthen it. An example would be in a crime case that is currently being solved. Before claiming who did what, when, and why, you can observe in order to make a better claim with better evidence and reasoning.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Otter Civet, also known as <em>Cynogale bennettii</em>, is an endangered species that inhabits Malaysia, southern Thailand, Sumatra and Borneo, and Vietnam. It is a carnivorous mammal that likes to eat fish and birds. They have a broad mouth and webbed feet with naked soles and long claws. Their population has decreased 50% over the past 15 years due to habitat destruction and pollutants, which saddens me because otters are my favorite animals.</div>]]></description>

         <title>When is a pandemic over?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The biggest take-away from this video would be the three options that the government can take when a pandemic arises. The first option is to "race through it," where the government allows the virus to flow and does not try to stop it. This causes doctors to be unaware of how to help patients and healthcare to collapse due to chaos in hospitals. The majority of people have been affected and either die or survive by building up immune systems before the pandemic fizzles out. The second option would be to "delay and vaccine," where the government slows the spread of the virus to give researchers time to create a vaccine. They host widespread testing to identify carriers then proceed to quarantine them and the people they've interacted with, and enforce social distancing. The virus still spreads causing hundreds of thousands to die. Resurgence is likely with this method. Pandemic fizzles out when 40-90% of people are vaccinated and herd immunity kicks in. Finally, the last option is to "coordinate and crush," where the mission is to starve the virus everywhere with quarantining, social distancing, and restricting travel. The key to this method is to treat the world as one big system rather than leaders responding to what is happening in their jurisdiction. The pandemic could end in just a few months with low loss of life, but it is highly unlikely. No matter what option is taken, the most important thing to do is to learn from past experiences.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Though the otter civet, or <em>Cynogale bennettii</em>, is thought to originate from Northern Vietnam, it now inhabits multiple different coastal countries and islands in Southeast Asia. These countries include Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and one of the Sunda Islands of western Indonesia, Sumatra. They prefer to live in areas that contain lowland primary forest, but have also been spotted living in other areas such as secondary forest, logged forest, and even bamboo. Peat swamp forests are also a popular place to find them inhabiting. Almost twenty years ago, this species was spotted in an acacia plantation in central Sarawak, a state of Malaysia. Five years later, they were seen in a huge area (of 43 square miles) in Sabah's Deramakot Forest Reserve in the Indonesian island of Borneo. That same year was when two otter civets were photographed in Central Kalimantan, a portion of Borneo.          <description><![CDATA[<div>My chosen species is the Otter Civet, which is a type of otter. They inhabit different parts of Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and more. Otters have been my favorite animals since I was a child, so it makes me very said to say that this species is in fact endangered. Their population has decreased over the years and is expected to continue doing so. It has dropped down by 50% in just a decade and a half, or 15 years. There are multiple reasons as to why the species is endangered. One of the biggest reasons are habitat destruction, which consists of the conversion of forest to oil palm. Another big reason is degradation, or breaking down, of riverine habitat by pollutants, or the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. Then, of course, climate change. Rising temperatures and higher carbon dioxide can weaken the structure of their habitat. In order to protect this rare species, forests must be protected and policies must be placed against illegal harvesting of timber.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Otters have been on Earth for the past 23 million years, according to scientific evidence. It is thought that otters as we know it today may have evolved significantly around 7 million years ago. Just like any species, in order for them to survive all of this time, otters have gone through many adaptations. Some of them are specific only to a given species while others occurred regarding all otters. The ability to be able to move both on land and water is one of them.</div><div>They have webbed feet that help them in the water, and also have five toes on each foot that help them to move around easilv on land. Despite this, it is believed that early otters were once only land animals. They ended up being in the water to get away from predators and find more food. The coat that they now have was a way of adapting to the cold temperatures in these waters.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>     Since I was younger, I have never really been a science kid. My favorite exercises were always the math and writing ones. I just simply had no interest in it. That changed in high school, thanks to my biology class. Since then, biology has been my favorite branch of science. Still, I was not sure of what this class would bring, since high school and college are different. However, this course has only solidified that fact. Before this course I was worried, during this course I was excited, and now after this course I feel anew.<br><br></div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; When searching for a biology class to take, I realized that there were no biology classes in-person that fit my schedule. This meant that I had to take an online course. I was very nervous about the fact because of my history with science. I was not sure if I would be able to focus and retain the information as well as I would in-person. I was sure that it would be a struggle to learn and my grade would suffer because of it.<br><br></div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Unexpectedly, during the first few meetings of the class, I felt very comfortable with the lectures and the work. The same feeling moved with me throughout the rest of the course. The assignments were very engaging and unique, which kept me focused and motivated. This was very different from what I expected going into the course, and I was glad.<br><br></div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Now, after the course, I love science even more than I did before. Because of how engaging and informing the material and assignments were, I now have much more knowledge on all things biology. I can see science and biology in a new light now. I gained facts that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In conclusion, although I was nervous before beginning the course, I proudly got through it. This course was much more fun and informing than I thought it would be, and I would not have been able to complete it if that weren't so. I am happy that the further I go in life, the more I am interested in the sciences.<br><br></div>]]></description>
