In the story it can be brung up that Xiomara feels ashamed of her body as very early in the story she is taunted for her figure and how she is a freak. she feels shame towards her body because of how others only see her womanly figure and not the person in front of them. another example is during most of the poem her mother is very controlling of Xiomara as she doesn't want her listening or reciting verses from rappers and throughout her life her mother wants her to be catholic forcing restrictions on her like how she cant date until college. This was hard for Xiomara as she is challenged as she wants to be obedient to her mother and making choices towards her life.

 When Elizabeth Acevedo says, “The world is almost peaceful when you stop trying to understand it”. I think she means when you stop caring about everything else and more on yourself you will be more at ease as you cannot understand everyone and everything but you can understand yourself.
