The chapter starts with the attorney general telling the jury about the prisoner. He was a young man and has been traveling between France and England for many years, on secret business. They had proof that the prisoner (Mr. Darcy) had information of the British forces and that he had leaked the information and had been leaking this information for 5 years, and for this reason, the jury should find him guilty and sentence him to death, “In the name of everything he could think of with a round turn in it and on the faith of his solemn asseveration that he already considered the prisoner as good as dead.” After this lots of excitement because the courtroom thinks that he is being sentenced to death. The attorney general then continues on questioning witnesses. After this, Mr. Stryver (the prisoners lawyer) called on a few witnesses. The judge continued to speak himself saying things against and for the prisoner then the jury gathered to discuss their verdict. It was taking the jury a long time to decide. Mr. Manette and Miss. Manette were outside the courtroom. Ms. Manette felt very faint and was taken out with her father. After hours of the jury deliberating Mr. Lorry called Jerry over (Present because he was hired as a messenger for Mr. Lorry in the previous chapter.) and handed him a piece of paper. The word Acquitted was written on the paper. The chapter ended with the crowd came rushing into the courtroom.

Analysis

The author brought back the theme of a man being recalled to life which was mentioned in the first book. Mr. Darney is seen as a dead man because of what he did and how he is on trial for the death penalty. However, with the help of his seemingly disinterested lawyer notices small details much faster than most others which helped him prove Mr. Darcy should not be killed. When the paper says acquitted Mr. Darcy gets “recalled to life” because he was a dead man walking due to this charge but when freed he can have his life back. Another example of this was in book 1 chapter 6 where Dr. Manette was freed and he had been “recalled to life” because, since he was released he was able to live again.
