for almost eight years, i’ve spent countless hours thinking about him, writing about him, creating edits & art about him, studying scenes, noticing tiny details in wilson bethel’s performance, and trying to understand who he is beneath everything that happens. he’s become a lens through which i’ve learned more about storytelling, psychology, trauma, and even myself. there has never been another fictional character who has stayed with me the way dex has.

what’s always amazed me is that wilson never treated him like he was just a villain. he played him as a person first. beneath all the violence and tragedy, there’s someone who wants to belong, who desperately wants to be understood, and who doesn’t know how to exist in a world that constantly feels out of reach. every emotion feels genuine. every hesitation, every expression, every tiny choice the writers and wilson bethel made made him feel real.

i’m an autistic lesbian, and while i know everyone interprets characters differently, i’ve always connected with dex through my own experiences. i’ve personally read him as autistic and as a gay man, not because i expect everyone to agree, but because that’s the version of him that has always spoken to me. i recognize pieces of myself in him: the feeling of living slightly outside everyone else, of watching people to understand them, of trying to follow rules that everyone else seems to know instinctively, of wanting connection while never quite knowing how to reach it. i’ve never seen him as a monster. i’ve always seen someone who feels profoundly human, and being human means he is capable of multitudes. he is both immoral and selfish while also being polite and respectful, just to name a few. those contradictions is one thing i love about the character.

wilson’s performance gave me a character i could spend years returning to, and somehow never run out of things to discover. every time i rewatch season 3, i find another moment that changes the way i understand him. that’s incredibly rare, and it’s a testament to how much care and humanity everyone apart of s3 brought to the role.

i also want to say that my appreciation has always been for wilson’s work. i don’t know him personally, and i don’t need or want to. what i respect is wilson’s craft and the compassion he brought to a character who could have been so easily reduced to a stereotype. instead, erik oleson, the writers room of season three, and wilson bethel created someone who feels deeply, painfully alive.

fiction has a way of staying with people, and dex has stayed with me for nearly eight years. he’s been a constant through different stages of my life, a source of comfort, inspiration, and endless curiosity. i genuinely don’t think i’d be the same person without this character, and that’s because of the humanity wilson bethel and everyone apart of season three gave him.

thank you wilson bethel for giving us a dex who feels like a real person. your work has meant more to me than i can ever fully explain.

Personally, it meant a lot to see someone who struggles with mental health issues like BPD represented in one of my favorite TV series ever.

I grew up watching Hart of Dixie with my aunt when i was little, and I remember having such a soft spot for Wade Kinsella from the very beginning. You brought so much charm, humor, warmth, and heart to that character, and he’s stayed with me all these years.

Getting to rediscover your talent through Daredevil was something else entirely. Going from someone as lovable and charming as Wade to someone as complex, unsettling, and unpredictable but still understandable (in his own way) as Dex, really made me appreciate just how incredibly talented and versatile you are as an actor. The way you can make an audience feel so many different emotions, sometimes without even saying a word, is genuinely remarkable.

And even though I came to know you as the absolute heartthrob that was Wade Kinsella, I gotta say your portrayalof Benjamin Poindexter is what really struck my feelings and cemented you as one of my favorite actors currently working.

What you brought to the character is something that continues to resonate with me even after all these years the and two cancelations of the show (😭). That vulnerability, the absolute sense of desperation, the doubting of one's view of the world when afflicted by mental disorders...
