For store avstander brukte man f.eks. steinkast, spydkast og dagsmarsj. 

For små størrelser ble ofte botaniske enheter, som bredde eller lengde av bl.a. valmuefrø, byggkorn og dadler, brukt. 

Slike enheter har vært i bruk fra mennesket lærte å telle. Noen benyttes fremdeles uten nærmere definisjon når det ikke er særlig behov for nøyaktighet. (Kilde SNL.)
