I believe that personalized learning is great for highly motivated students. First of all, it requires solid IT equipment, which our students often do not have. A survey at our school showed that more than 70% of students used cell phones for classes during the COVID lockdown. I had to repeat all the lessons covered via video conferencing when we returned to classes. The students remembered almost nothing. Very frustrating. This was great for the IT sector, which sold equipment and software, but it did not benefit the students. Today, they offer obvious resistance when we need to do something online.

Since I met Modern Classrooms Project (https://www.modernclassrooms.org/), I'm not able to separate the idea of personalized learning from the blended instruction, self-paced structures and mastery-based grading approach.

From that point of view, I've learned that personalized (or differentiated) learning for students consists on providing instruction to each student at his or her own level. AI supports this possibility, but it holds both the teacher and the students accountable: the teacher must realease the grades and evaluation in a timely manner to be able to really 🤬 the each studend and, in that way, personalize the instruction needed by each one; and the students must be responsable for their learning, which includes the cases of absenteeism, remembering that the pathway of learning must be done by the students themselves.

Using AI to support the decisions related to personalized learning will not only benefit the students, but also the teacher, because it will free-up the much needed time needed to help individual students and it will open up the possibilities for collaboration between the students and the teacher and the students with each other.
