Summary:
In 1972, 5 unusual men were caught breaking into the Watergate in Washington, DC. Prior to that, in 1971 president Nixon abuse his power by creating a grouped called, "The Plumbers", who investigated  leaks of information to the press, but incidentally, 5 of the unusual men who broke into Watergate happened to be Plumbers. Key Point: In order to fix inflation they needed to increase supply. The idea they had was that decreasing taxes would let companies have more money to spend on labor and supply.

Key Point: To switch power over to the states, Reagan gave states more responsibility in for many programs in health, education, and welfare. Also, Reagan helped pay for these social programs by using money from the federal treasury.

Summary : In conclusion, Reagan wanted to give more power to the states because he said that government is the problem. Another thing Reagan did was Supply side economics. To fix inflation he put tax cuts down so that companies could make more product. From 1982 to the end of Reagan's second term, however, annual deficits exceeded $100 billion. In 1986, the annual deficit reached a new record of $221 billion. Despite receiving a lot of backlash, Clinton abolished this system and created a new one called (TANF) to help bring mothers off welfare and into the workforce. It ended up becoming very successful, and the child poverty rate decreased drastically.

Key Point: After Clinton won  reelection in 1996, he wanted to help improve the economy and avoid Budget issues. He signed the new Budget act of 1997 that resulted in a Budget surplus for the country. The economy was improving and new business opportunities and jobs were given, making unemployment decrease.

Summary : Clinton made it his priority when he took office to reform the welfare system and change the Budget system that was in place. As his welfare plan started to become successful, he started to gain more support and popularity from both parties. He started working with Democrats and Republicans and passed the new Budget act that resulted in a economic boom.

Key Point:  Japan was better equipped economically and technically to rebound from the tsunami however, still relied on outside help and disaster response teams.   Japan had major explosions at nuclear power plant that caused radioactive gas leaks into forests, farmlands, and houses causing in the upwards of 90,000 to evacuate.   Americans gave $246 million to relief efforts even though most of the international aide came in the form of donation monies

Who/When/Where/Why:
  • On January 12th, 2010 a huge earthquake rocked the Caribbean island nation of Haiti.  As the cause of the quake was unknown over 230,000 people died and another 1.5 million were left homeless.  
  • In March 2011 an Earthquake roughly 200 miles off the coast of Japan created a huge tsunami.  This tsunami rolled into northern Japan destroying small towns and killed over 20,000 people. 


Summary:  The nation of Haiti and the country of Japan were both rocked by very different natural disasters that completely wiped out villages,  killed civilians, and left many homeless and without food or water.   In both cases, the United States, other foreign countries, The United Nations, and many other non governmental organizations stepped up to provide services to those impacted.   Not only were services provided, medical care given, food and water, provided, but also,  millions in donated and non donated money from the United States and other agencies.   It just goes to show how people all over the world step up when disaster occurs and there are people in need.

The U.S. decided to pull its troops out, and the UN mission ended shortly after.

Summary: Reagan lost support due to as scandal that found he was sending arms to a dangerous Iran. Who had held Americans as hostage and known to have a support for terrorism. While, without Reagan's knowledge, his officials were illegally sending aid from the arms to the Contras in Nicaragua. Without connection to the Contras scandal, Reagan faced no convictions, but two of his officials were convicted but were overturned.

Key Point: In the system that we have in our democracy if you vote for someone running outside of the Republican or Democratic Party you are essentially throwing away you vote because 3rd party candidate do not have a very good chance at winning. In the 2020 election there was big discussion about voting for 3rd party candidate, because the of the election being unpredictable if you were to vote for a 3rd you would have had no effect on who was actually going to be president.
