When I was a kid, I remember holding onto everyone of young Tracy's problems and feeling her pain of unrequited love. I also remember singing along to the angst filled songs of Tracy's life. I remember my first taste of actual racism in third grade and how I thought of Little Ines in the movie and how she would just shrug off racists. Now, it is pretty much a right of passage to being my friend to watch Hairspray with me in my basement. I read this book while going through a tough time and I remember realizing as I read it that it was okay to be mad. It was okay to sit back and think "This isn't fair". I started to reflect this in my writing and I found that it helped me a lot. It caused a lot of fights in my family. One thing my father and i could always do is bond over that song. We would always sing it together in the car, regardless of whatever state we were in. My father and I still sing it all the time together and To this day, I can still sing the guitar solo without a problem.
