Because I haven't created text for my menu yet, I wasn't able to use the tips about paragraph styles (and nested styles), autoflowing text, hidden characters, etc. but as I begin working on that text today these will come in handy. 
I had started watching this video before I created my rough logo, so I was able to utilize Kuler, which is my new favorite thing!!
Kuler has an option of choosing a color theme from a photo. In my case I used works of art by one of the Italian masters, Carravaggio. The program picks out 5 colors from any photo and gives you the matching swatches to use in AI. You can also tweak the palette by choosing bright, dark, etc. variations.

I was already familiar with some of the information given but I liked that it was shown in a way that is relevant to this project. I particularly found the video on the single page layout very helpful as that is the type of menu design I am going for, though I am including a backside as well. I specially learned a bit more of what to do with the typography, I had a project in the past and I felt like the typography had a lot missing and after watching the video there's several things that are needed so it looks complete.

It gave some great tips on shortcuts and how to use different aspects of the main menu to create other menus. I found the tips on getting and saving colors to be useful as well as how to create different styles and apply them. The menu layout was an interesting take and very useful for a restaurant that has a menu that changes often. It was nice to have refresher on some of the aspects of InDesign like text flow. Creating textures was also neat to learn.

I recommend following along with the exercise files or open up InDesign and start to work on your menu while watching the video for a more hands-on learning experience. His videos showed how to make multiple styles of menus which was very helpful if you’re like me and hadn’t decided on a style yet; he showed how each looked and it helped me make up my mind for what to do. I hadn't ever considered designing a menu with a pocket, which I thought was a tremendously unique concept. The use of Kuler was also relatively new to me; it's a functionality I'll endeavor to explore further, given its usefulness in scouting out colors for a project. A majority of the techniques, composition, and design/body copy tips served as helpful review. I thought the custom brush, assembled with burlap texture, was intriguing.
