A large, pig-sized animal , Lystrosaurus led a hippopotamus-like life, living in or near large bodies of water. It is often thought they relaxed in the water to balance their weight comfortably, so, it grew its eyes and nostrils to the top of its head, to prevent eye injury and suffocation. It also had a powerful bite, which could prove helpful when faced with a large reptillian predator, or when it needed to chew up tough plants. It is thought it lived in large herds, to discourage hungry predators. It also helped prove Alfred Wegener's theory on plate tectonics
