my concept from making this poster is, I use photograph to eyecatch the audience. this photograph also tell a lovers who spend their time to leisure in afternoon before sunset. I use this photo because I think the song meaning can
represented by this single picture. the reason I use Segoe UI for my typeface because Segoe UI is good for small text. the reason I use small text for body text and the lyrics because the layout limitation and space limitation. the reason I put the main text in the right because I want audience to see the picture first( reading from the left to right) so audience will read in the correct order. the reason I use transparent text in the main title because I hope it will catch the reader attention to read the main title first before reading the another text( obvious right?). using another color( black and white) from background color is made the main title stand out for the other text and also use the biggest text size and use capital text, only to interest the audience.
1. how to create the layout better especially in poster use( more effective and good looking)?
2.how to place or crop the picture for poster use so that my poster will be more effective and good looking?
3.how to choose correct typeface in the appropiate place?

My ideas behind this poster is about the folklore between the farmer who had a child named Timun Emas. The farmer got this beautiful baby from prayed to a monster called Buta Ijo to give them children. Buta Ijo was a ferocious and powerful monster, who likes eating fresh human meat. But He granted their wish on one condition : When Timun Emas grown up, he will come again to take her and eat her. But after Timun Emas grown up and Buta Ijo condition is come, She tried to escape from her biggest nightmare. And She survived.

The story also tell a moral that we as a human being need to have a responsible with a things that we want and care for to protect them from any kind of danger in order for them to feel save My poster is using drawing illustration to visualized this famous folklore story from Java , Indonesia. I'm using harrington font as a title font because it represent a mythology or mythical folklore story from indonesia.

There she receives help from the forest witch...

The poster shows a key moment from the tale...
The idea behind it is to intrigue people to know more/ the sequel of the story/ by the situation that is depicted and not only...The characters are dressed in traditional Bulgarian clothes with detailed pattern, the used colors are not random as well.
Another interesting thing is that at the end of all tales there is an important lesson that they teach so does this one but if you want to know it you have to read it first :D

However, this poster is just an initial idea that may be changed.
The characters are not finished( specially the girl in the river who is not going to be bold).
The fonts used for heading and main text are not going to be same.

Made with: Adobe Illustrator
/Under the poster you can visualize closer the details/

Do you think the story would interest you by seen the poster?
Are the colours and detailes/style of drawing/ catching your attention?
Do you think the position of the heading and main text are appropriate?
What would you suggest can be changed?

Thanks :)

The Rollright Stones

The Rollright Stones folklore is well known in my local county of Warwickshire. The stones lie on the border of Oxfordshire and Warwickshire, with legend suggesting they used to be a king and his army! Thousands of years ago, as the king and his men were marching over the Cotswolds they met a witch who challenged the king to view the local village of Long Compton in only seven footsteps and if he succeeded he would become king of England. As he took his last stride a mound rose up obscuring his view. The witch turned them all to stone and she turned herself into an elder tree nearby. Supposedly if the tree is cut the spell is broken and the stones will come back to life!

To create a challenge, I tried to create a design that prioritised typography. My design is nowhere near finished (as you can see!) however I hope you can get the general style of it from my image. The elder tree will span the whole right-hand side of the A2 poster. Finer detail, colour and shading will be added digitally along with a basic backdrop for the typography to lie on. I’m aware some words will need to be made clearer and the tracking and kerning will be tidied up digitally. I will also play with the scale of the words.

It says “7 long strides thou shall take, and if Long Compton thou canst see, king of England thou shalt be… as Long Compton thou canst not see, king of England thou shalt not be! Rise up stick & stand still stone, thou & thy men 🤬 stones shall be, for king of England thou shalt be none and I myself an Elder Tree”.

Would this poster interest you to visit the Rollright Stones site?

Does it work having such a variety of typefaces?

Should I add colour of keep it black and white?

Can you make sense of what the poster says or it the English too old? Or perhaps does this work in it’s favour to keep it old fashioned?

Ben Frowen - Cov Uni

Without giving the entire story away at once... To summarise, Guy of Warwick is a tale of a man who defeats many different monsters (and people) to prove to a woman that he is worthy of her love as she is of a much higher status than he is. After defeating a long list of people and monsters he finally is able to marry the woman of his dreams, and is also knighted by the King of England!

This tale of folklore to me personally talks about the lengths of which a man will go for the person he (or she) loves, which is something I am sure every person can relate to in some way.

In my illustration I wanted to show one of his famous fights between him and the Dragon. The intended theme was to be medieval in setting, but not necessarily in the illustration style. I want this to appeal to a modern audience. I also wanted to give off this feeling of heroism in the illustration too, so I am looking forward to hearing if I managed to pull this off! Please let me know.

My main questions so far are...

1. Would you be able to tell what time period this is set in if I had not of given you the story?
2. Do you feel as though the typography could have been used more creatively? How?
3. Would this poster benefit more if it was illustrated to reflect more on medieval times? Or is it better suited to be more contemporary as shown below?

Thank you for viewing my work so far. Excited to see everybody else's!

Lina Svensson

So trolls. You're probably thinking about internet trolls but, trolls in sweden/scandinavia is a pretty big thing. Trolls are big monsters, they're ugly, stupid, dangerous and can hurt you. They usually live in the woods and in dark caves. There's tooooons of children books about trolls, I loved reading about them when I was younger. In most scandinavian kid movies, the "monster" is usually a troll.

I decided not to focus on a specific story about the trolls, because they're so many. So instead I focused on the troll itself. Since they're dangerous and quite scary I decided to make it kinda, horror themed. Kind of illustrating someone who hates the trolls, doodling all this in their notebook. How horrible they are, and how they've hurt his/her family and friends in the past.

So my questions,

1. Should I change the typeface or does it fit in with the style?

2. Did I manage to make it atleast a little bit scary?
3. Is it arranged well? Should I move anything or cut up the text so it's not just two boxes of text?

Aurellia Putri Aviga - Ciputra University

In Indonesia especially for Javanese people, dakon or congklak is already commonly heard of and played traditional game for them. Dakon is usually played by girls but that doesn't mean boys can't play along, it's an easy game which is fine to be played by anyone of any gender of any age. This game exists eversince around the year 1970. Dakon in the old times, and even now, exist and made by using wood with a lot of details and engraving in both of each sides.

Although dakon is no longer played by a lot of children nowadays, considering how modern this era is now, but that doesn't mean dakon no longer exists. There are plenty of traditional markets around especially in the Java island that still sell them. The difference is, dakon right now is made using plastics with so many colors of selection.

It's easy to play dakon, you can master it right away! It is played by two person by facing each other, the dakon has 6 or 7 hole in each of the side and a big hole in each of the right and left side, there's around 14 or 16 hole in total. We need a small seed yo play it.

First we have to simultaneously scooping up the seeds in any hole of the player side, each seeds need to be dropped one by one and it'll continue clockwise until the last seed is place that means it'll be the next player turn. You'll win if one of the players have lost all of their seeds in every and each hole that they have on their sides.

Manuk Dadali is an Indonesian folk song from Sunda, West Java. Manuk Dadali is also known as Garuda (bird). The song speaks about the mightiness of Garuda. Garuda is also a symbol of Indonesia, therefore this song also speaks about nationalism.

The Garuda I drew, is inspired by the Garuda of Bali GWK (Garuda Wisnu Kencana) statue. For your information, Garuda is a Hindu mythological creature. It is a ride for god Vishnu. As you can see from GWK statue, god Vishnu is riding Garuda.

I gave gold (brown) accent to make it elegant, since it is about the mightiness of the glorious Garuda. The layout has wide clear spaces to help audience to read the 150 words text easily. I made the Garuda line art a bit messy, so it won't be that stiff, since it already has aligned layouts and simple typefaces.

So, let me ask you
1. Is the text readable enough?
2. How is the visual hierarchy? Which part did you see first?
3. Should I make the line art neat or should I keep it this way (the messy line art)? Why?
4. Is there any English grammar errors? (HAHAHA) if there is, please kindly tell me :)

fyi, I uploaded this on Instragram too, but with a different layout to match the square.

Jack Smethurst

Arthur obtained the British throne by pulling a sword from an anvil sitting atop a stone that appeared in a churchyard on Christmas Eve. In this account, the act could not be performed except by "the true king," meaning the divinely appointed king or true heir of Uther Pendragon. As Malory's writes:
"Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born." This sword is thought by many to be the famous Excalibur, and its identity is made explicit in the later Prose Merlin, part of the Lancelot-Grail cycle. The challenge of drawing a sword from a stone also appears in the Arthurian legends of Galahad, whose achievement of the task indicates that he is destined to find the Holy Grail.

I have decided to choose this folktale as I believe it not only to be interesting but also quite in-depth. Excalibur is only one of the many challenges Arthur had to face during his reign and if this story intrigues you then I highly recommend looking into other tales surrounding not only Arthur Pendragon, but his knights of the round table as well.

As for the poster itself, I have decided to keep quite a simplistic design to focus more on the story but also represent it in a way that is also relevant. Almost in a "Tome" or "Parchment" type layout I wished to relate to the stories origins.

Questions:

1. Is it legible?

2. Would the poster gain anything from using colour?

3. Did the use of content make you want to find out more?

Indonesia was colonized by the Portuguese, Spanish, English, and Dutch starting in the 16th century. Then it was occupied by Japan in World War II. Therefore, the celebration of Independence Day is an event filled with civic pride and nationalism.

Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, along with his first vice-president Mohammad Hatta, proclaimed Indonesia’s independence on the 17th of August 1945. What followed was a 4 year fight for independence. It only ended after the Dutch recognized Indonesia’s independence on the 27th of December 1949.

The month of August will see a surge of the national colors of red and white everywhere. Also, other national symbols will also appear. For example, the national emblem, Garuda Pancasila. Government offices and businesses will decorate, some of them elaborately.

If you live in a house with a yard, it is customary to fly the national flag in front of it. Further decorations such as buntings and banners are also common. Cars are decorated with small flags. Naturally you will see street vendors selling these for your convenience. Nowadays LED and other lighted decorations are also common.

Indonesia is a very communal society. Hence, your community may organize communal work (kerja bakti). For example, sprucing up the neighborhood for the special day. This includes trimming plants, repainting community assets and cleaning out gutters. Sometimes there will also be invitation for social work (bakti sosial). This could include visiting an orphanage or helping the less fortunate. It is a great way to help your community and show civic pride.

JESSICA AYUMI ARIS
20316002

Angela Priscila Montolalu - Ciputra University

Kecak is a type of dance which is developed on 1930 in Bali, Indonesia. This type of dance tells us the story of Ramayana (a story of heroism in Hindu's history) when monkeys helped Rama to fight Rahwana. Furthermore, this type of dance is also known as a sacred dance because when the dancers perform, they lose consciousness and communicate with their God or their ancestral spirits to deliver the people's prayer. This dance consists of 50 - 150 dancers which is dominated by men who sit and make a circle which impersonates the shape of fire. Men dancers will dance by moving their hands up and down as they are echoing "cak cak cak" thus they create a wonderful acapella music. The dancers' outfit is a black and white squared-pattern sarong which is being tied on their hip. Kecak dance is one of Indonesian traditional dances which is known worldwide, and it is an iconic dance of Bali.

Leonard Merlim - Ciputra University

Tari Piring or Plate Dance is the art of dance held by the Minangkabau tribe in West Sumatra, originated in Solok Town. This dance reflects the life of traditional Minangkabau people at the time of working in the ricefield. The dance expresses happiness of the farmers as well as their gratitude to God for the very successful harvest.

Plate Dance is done in pairs or in groups with a variety of movements that are done quickly, dynamically and interspersed with plate knock sound carried by the dancers. The performer of Plate dance is always accompanied by the traditional instrument called Talempong and Saluang, while the movements are done quickly while holding the plate in the palm of their hand.

The dance has a motion that resembles the movement of farmers during cultivation, harvest and so create employment. The dance begins with the initial work in the field and proceeds to the final process until harvested rice. Sometimes these plates they throw into the air or they fling to the ground. At the final stage of the dance, the male and young lady dancers will trample the broken plates, without getting hurt. This fact should not interpreted as a magic work, as many people may think, but it religiously signals the acceptance of the dancer’s pray by God.

The questions are,
1. Betel is also the most important element in canang.

Canang is a main tool and upakara (equipment) of Hinduism in every day prayer. Canang is a form of offering during a prayer.

There are several types of canang differentiated according to religious events and functions. Among them are Canang Sari, Canang Burat, Canang Maraka, Canang Genten and many others. Inside canang there are various combinations including Ceper, Bija (rice), Porosan, Snack, Cane, Banana, Sampas Uras, Various Flowers, Potpourri, Boreh Minyik and Perfume.

The combination is the most important element in praying because each of them has its own meaning.

The reason why I choose this topic is to explain about canang to give a little insight about Hindu culture in Bali to the outside community.

Do you have any suggestion for improve this poster?

Si Loreng is a folktale from Tasikmalaya, West Java, about a tiger named Loreng (Stripes) who lived with a farmer couple and their baby. In short, the tiger got killed because the farmer couple mistook the blood on his mouth as their baby's, when it was actually because he had protected the baby from a dangerous snake and killed it.

For the poster design, I wanted to put the scene where the tiger has blood on his mouth, with the baby crib in blood situation. I wanted to give a dark and mysterious vibes, so I used black as my background. I thought of using the tiger head as the main attraction of the poster so I put the drawing as the largest one with bright color. The color red and in uppercase for "Si Loreng" was to give a contrast, spooky and bloody feel

So , the questions that I would like to ask are;
1. Do you think the illustration describe the story well?
2. Was the text easy to read or nah?
3. What should I add or reduce to make the poster more valuable and memorable?

Lastly, Did you notice that there's a snake-like shape on the blood below the crib? I'm sorry for bad grammar and I hope you enjoy my work!

They got married and had a son, Samosir. Toba promised the girl not to tell anyone she's a fish.
But Toba accidentally called Samosir "the son of a fish" due to anger. Storms appeared, and the girl went back to the lake and turns into a bigger fish. The lake overflowed and is now known as the Toba Lake.
The moral of the story is to never break promises that are made, and to control anger and be patient.

In my poster I tried to include some patterns. This is called “Ulos” which means “cloth” in North Sumatra, the place where Toba Lake is. I only included the golden fish in my poster since she’s the main reason the Lake is formed. If only no promises were made, there will be no Toba Lake. Toba would just keep on saying “You fish head!” without getting into trouble.

You know what bugs me?

Well…

1.

Ferdinan Linardi - Ciputra University (UC)

The term gotong royong originally comes from the Javanese languange and means communal work in English. Gotong royong is a form of action done by group of people to achieve one or more shared objective and becoming national identity of Indonesia culture. Based on history, gotong royong becomes the main foundation in the making of Pancasila (the third principle, "A unified Indonesia")

Nowadays, globalization is present in our society. People day by day become more individualistic. Many of us may forget or neglect the fact that human is social being, and as time goes by, gotong royong will be extinct.

In the making of this poster, i would like to deliver message about the value of "gotong royong". In the center, there is big hand holding a phone. On the phone screen, there is image of men in the past done gotong royong to move letter O, T, O of gotong royong with brown and serif letter(for a vintage look). The shadow of man merges together with the hand, represent as one reality. The man yet represents the individualistic of our human being now.

From top to bottom, i drew some illustrations on the background. On the top side, there are sceneries like mountain, houses, river. This potrays that our nature is already work together to create life. I made white silhouette of people working together to represent the activity of gotong royong that happened in the past or spirit of the gotong royong that is fading now. It's visible but not clear. From this silhouette/blank,i want to emphasize different realm between past and present of gotong royong.

I hope i can deliver the message well since i think people lack interest in doing gotong royong and i dont want world lose the value of gotong royong. Anyway comments and advices are very welcomed😀

This folklore story is a Chinese legend about ten brothers born from their mother accidentally eating a soup containing ten magical pearls, with the moral of the story of having to co-operate and work together as a team in order to accomplish the problems they face. The ten brothers each possess a supernatural power in which is introduced throughout the story.

At first I wasn't entirely sure whether I should go for an English folktale or a Chinese one because of my nationality vs ethnicity identity crisis, but ultimately, I went with my heritage origin to hope to showcase Chinese culture, customs and folklore to my peers.

I laid out the design of my poster as it is to show the ten pearls that represent the ten brothers and ten powers and also the meaning of the legend by highlighting of unity and togetherness with the circular forms, as well as adding a hint of traditional Chinese style with the vertical writing of the Chinese characters for the title.
One of the "Four Great Inventions" from ancient China includes paper-making, which is suggested through the texture of the background of my poster.
Some of the words are are highlighted bold to make it stand out more to the audience, and those words are the more important ones, which the audience can read at a glance to get the gist of the story quickly.
The audience is also able to learn some Chinese characters and the pronunciation of the title of the legend, although I would want to add more English words linking with the types of powers around the edges of the pearls, since it is not clear on what they mean to someone who does not know Chinese.

What I would like to ask are:

Should there also be ping-yin (phonetic spelling, just like the title: Shí Xiōng Dì) above the Chinese characters of the powers?

Is the font too thin, therefore not legible enough to be read? What do you think of the bolded words?

Do the widows bother you?

The first and eldest brother has the power of seeing miles away (眼); would it be better for that pearl to start at the top instead? Or where else could it start from?

Any other suggestions would be helpful! :)

Angklung is a multitonal musical instrument (pitched double) traditionally developed in Sundanese society in western part of Java Island. This instrument is made of bamboo, sounded by shaking (sound caused by bamboo pipe body collision) to produce a vibrating sound in the tone of 2, 3, to 4 tones in each size, both large and small. Jonathan Rigg's Dictionary of the Sunda Language, published in 1862 in Batavia, writes that Angklung is a musical instrument made of bamboo pipes, cut into the edges, resembling pipes in an organ, and tied together in a frame, vibrated to produce sound. Angklung is listed as Masterpiece of Oral and Non-Angelic Cultural Heritage of UNESCO since November 2010.

Notes on the new angklung appear referring to the time of the Sunda Kingdom (12th century to 16th century). The origin of the creation of bamboo music, such as angklung based on the view of the living Sundanese society with agrarian source of life from rice (pare) as a staple food. This gave birth to the myth of belief in Nyai Sri Pohaci as the symbol of the life-giving Goddess of Rice (inhaled). The Baduy community, regarded as the remains of the original Sundanese people, applied Angklung as part of the ritual of initiating rice cultivation. The angklung gubrag game in Jasinga, Bogor, is one that has survived more than 400 years ago. Its emergence starts from the rice rite. Angklung was created and played to entice Dewi Sri down to earth so that the people's rice plants thrive.

Types of bamboo commonly used as a musical instrument is black bamboo (awi wulung) and bamboo ater (awi temen), which if dried yellow white. Each tone (barrel) is produced from the sound of its bamboo tube in the shape of a blade (wilahan) of each bamboo segment from small to large.

Stephen Hariono - Ciputra University

Tempat Ibadah Tri Darma.
This is a sacred place for Buddhist, Taoist, and Kong Hu Chu people to pray and do other religion related activity. In China, every religion (Buddhist, Taoism, and Kong Hu Chu) supposedly have their own place for praying and doing activity. The term ‘Temple’ or ‘Pagoda’ refers to a sacred place for Buddhist, Taoist, or Kong Hu Chu people to pray and do other activity. There’s Buddhist Temple, Taoist Temple, and Kong Hu Chu Temple. In Indonesia, our government didn’t acknowledge Taoism. Our Government only acknowledege Buddhist and Kong Hu Chu as a religion. That’s why we have a ‘Tri Dharma Worship Place’ (Tempat Ibadah Tri Darma - TITD). This place is like a giant Temple for Buddhist, Taoist, and Kong Hu Chu people to come and pray and do other activity.
TITD Kwan Sing Bio, Tuban is the largest TITD in Indonesia. Located in R.E Martadinata No. 1, this giant temple is located facing a beautiful beach. There was a story that said, one time ago Khong Co (Guan Yu, a Great General from China) want to go to TITD Tjoe Ling Kiong (This place is a place for Mak Co or The God of Ocean from China) by riding a ship. While on their way, Kong Co’s ship suddenly stopped in the exact place where now the TITD Kwan Sing Bio is. This temple has a giant crab as an icon. Visitors can easily notice the giant crab that’s on top of the entry way. This icon is choosen because back than, this temple was built in a swamp that have a lot of crab in there. The crabs can be used for Fang Sheng, a ritual to erase people’s sin and bring good karma by releasing captive animals like fish, crab, and tortoise. TITD Kwan Sing Bio have a mast parking space that can accomodate a thousand cars at once. This temple also provides a place to sleep, (that can accomodate 3.000 visitors) and food that being served starting from 7AM to 8PM, 7 days a week.

(basically a gift giving version of knock-knock-run) (Jacks counterpart Snatch Valentine, would play tricks on people, leaving them without a present, however he is less remembered,). Many people in Norfolk will still leave gifts for each other on the doorstep (often to their children or neighbours) with a mysterious giver who vanishes.

The rhyme on the poster is from the 1800’s when children would go out before dawn on valentines day, to sing rhymes in exchange for sweets and cakes. There are many variations of this rhyme, some of which are still said today.

The poster has the same illustration reflected, to create the sense of mystery, and unknown that Jack Valentine leaves. Also through the reflection a more subtle love heart shape is created (as I didn’t want the poster to be super love hearts and look like it walked out of a gift shop in February) Some of the patterns within the illustration reflect the shapes on the Norfolk county flag, as Jack valentine is only found here.

QUESTIONS:

What do you want to know about Jack Valentine? (as I am yet to decide what way the text should go, either the more historical or the what is still done today or both, or something else)

Also should the text be more prominent?

What do you think about the spacing and sizing of the title text? The puppets are played using all five fingers; the three middle fingers of the puppeteer control the head, while the thumbs and little finger control both hands of the puppets. The musical accompaniment for the performance consist of: gembreng, kecer or cymbals, cheh and puah, guitar, rebab, tambourine, trumpet, and piak-kok. of the Jin Dynasty. According to legend, the puppets were created when 5 prisoners were given the death sentence for their crime. While four of the convicts fell into despair, one tried to distract himself by playing music with pots, plates, and other items around him to accompany an imaginary puppet performance. The legend further goes that the emperor happened to hear the unique but harmonious sounds, whereupon he pardoned all five convicts.
I hope you enjoyed reading and found the culture interesting

Questions:
What do you think about the poster? i would very appreciate any comments given with open arms!!^_^

Therefore, it is okay to feel that life is hard, poor and miserable, but we should not give up, and keep dreaming to achieve happiness in our life. Ai sai na boi do jolma partalaga muba gabe parjuluon” means: Life can be full of misery right now only full suffering, hang on and keep hoping because life can change in and berpengharapanlah.Because life can change, from suffering into happiness.

Then, after waiting one or two years, their upper arms and the backs of their hands were marked. Next, the tattooing of the upper thighs and legs was executed and followed by the intricate tattoos of the chest and neck. They are also believed to provide a good harvest, health, and happiness during the year. The costumes that they wear are made from different materials – from textiles to animal fur, horns and wood. They aim to look scary and terrifying, so they can send the bad creatures away.
The bells are important part of the costumes – it is said that their sound is magical – it can heal and it can scare the evil. Each and every one of them has its own sound or as we call it ‘voice’. The kukeri traditionally visit peoples' houses at night so that "the sun would not catch them on the road’’. After parading around the houses they usually gather at the square to dance wildly and amuse the people. Kukeri rituals vary by region but remain largely the same in essence.
This happens during the time of the year between Christmas and Epiphany – known as Dirty days in our folklore. This is the most dangerous "evil" time of the year, in which evil spirits act with increased activity on the earth. According to traditional folklore, during the Dirty days, various supernatural demonic beings, (such as karakonjuls, vampires, goblins, werewolves and so on), have been walking on the ground from dusk until dawn; in some places it is believed that the souls of the dead are also coming to the earth. The costumes, the dances and the performances of the kukeri tells us stories and legends. They are complex, multilayered and full of deep symbolism, and full of its peculiarities. He lived in a valley which land was fertile, therefore he was able support his life by the crops he grew although he was not a rich man. One day as he goes fishing by himself, his rod caught a big fish. As he lifted the fish, it suddenly talked. The fish cried and begged him to release it. Surprised to see a talking fish, he released it to the river, but suddenly the fish transformed into beautiful young woman. The young woman said that she was actually a princess cursed to be a fish This first encounter mark the historical creation of the infamous Toba Lake and the birth of Batak Tribe in Indonesia”.

Questions:
1.

According to the legend, Grand Duke Gediminas was hunting in the sacred forest near the Valley of Šventaragis. Tired after the successful hunt of a wisent, the Grand Duke settled in for the night. He fell soundly asleep and dreamed of a huge Iron Wolf standing on top a hill and howling as strong and loud as a hundred of wolves. Upon awakening, the Duke asked the pagan priest Lizdeika to interpret the dream. And the priest told him: “What is destined for the ruler and the State of Lithuania, is thus: the Iron Wolf represents a castle and a city which will be established by you on this site. This city will be the capital of the Lithuanian lands and the dwelling of their rulers, and the glory of their deeds shall echo throughout the world.” Therefore, Gediminas, obeying the will of gods, built the city, and took it the name Vilnius – from the stream of the Vilnia River.

Questions:
1.

My poster is for a Filipino Folklore about a Diwata which essentially is a type of Goddess/Fairy. The name of the folklore is Mariang Sinukuan which is also the name of the Diwata, her name translates to “Maria Who?”. The reason for this is because Maria is said to have disappeared many years ago and people have forgotten exactly what she looks like. To summarise the story, Maria lived in Mount Arayat in the Philippines and helped the Kapampangan people in their village by providing food and livestock during their turmoil. However, as the village began to prosper the people became greedy and wanted more gifts from Maria. Maria got tired and disgusted by the people’s greediness and left to never return with all the fruitages of Mount Arayat. As the story is both mysterious and involving magic, I illustrated a magical scroll and a silhouette of a fairy reading this letter indicating Maria has read it. The purpose of the poster is to intrigue the viewer about who Maria is, which is the essence of the story.

Does this intrigue you enough to want to learn more about the meaning behind this letter?

Without reading the text apart from “Dear Mariang Sinukuan”, what does this poster visually communicate to you?

If you read the text on the poster, do you understand the basis of the folklore with it still being rather mysterious?

Mihai Toma - Coventry University

The Iele are feminine mythical creatures in Romanian mythology. They are said to live in the sky, in forests, in caves, on isolated mountain cliffs and in marshes, and reported to have been seen bathing in the springs or at crossroads. They mostly appear at night by moonlight, as dancing in secluded areas such as glades, the tops of certain trees, ponds, river sides, crossroads or abandoned fireplaces, dancing naked, with their breasts almost covered by their dishevelled hair, with bells on their ankles and carrying candles. The place where they had danced would after remain carbonized, with the grass incapable of growing on the trodden ground, and with the leaves of the surrounding trees scorched. Later, when grass would finally grow, it would have a red or dark-green colour, the animals would not eat it, but instead mushrooms would thrive on it. The Iele are also believed to be agents of revenge for God or of the 🤬, having the right to avenge in the name of their employers. When they are called upon to act, they hound their victims into the centre of their dance, until they die in a furor of madness or torment.

I have represented this myth by showcasing the spiritual dance of the Iele.

Mihai Toma - Coventry University

Haiducii (Outlaws) were valiant Romanian men who left their villages and households and hid in forests to escape injustice and poverty. Before 1850, at a time when the forests occupied three-quarters of the country’s surface, the outlaws travelled the country concealed by nature. Living in solitude or in gangs, they plundered wealthy travellers, boyars and lessees and whomever gathered wealth by oppressing the poor. Most of the loot was given to help the needy and the rest was buried in hiding spots. It is said that they had great hideaways where they met, such as near a strange tree or a thunderstroke tree. The kingdom sent soldiers to capture them, but the outlaws knew the forests too well to be found. The outlaws were captured by soldiers and killed only if betrayed by false friends. These legendary figures sparkled stories, songs and ballads that are sacredly kept in the Romanian folklore.

I have represented these legendary heroes by showcasing the outcast/outlaw nature of the Haiduci.

Christy Wong - Coventry University

The general tale is a love story between Zhinü (the weaver girl, symbolising the star Vega) and Niulang (the cowherd, symbolising the star Altair). Their love was not allowed, thus they were banished to opposite sides of the Silver River (symbolising the Milky Wavy Galaxy). Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, a flock of magpie would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day. There are many variations of the story. The earliest-known reference to this famous myth dates back to over 2600 years ago, which was told in a poem from the Classic of Poetry.

I combined the illustration and the word "七夕" ( 7th day of the 7th lunar month) on the poster.

Questions:

1.

Emine Gokgoz - Coventry University

Stories of the Banshee have been passed on through the generations for centuries. Some say that the Banshee is the ghost of a young woman who was brutally killed and died so horribly that she now watches families and loved ones warning them of an impending death.

According to Legend, the Banshee can also take on many forms. However, in Ireland, she has been most commonly seen as either a beautiful, young woman with long, flowing silver/white (sometimes red) hair or as an old woman in rags with dirty grey hair, long fingernails and sharp-pointed rotten teeth. The fear she instills in people who have the bad luck of hearing her is always the same. What all witnesses of the Banshee agree on is most terrifying wailing.

The Banshee is famous for her long, melancholy keening, which is an Irish word which is used to describe the lament that women used to do over the body of a deceased person to ward off evil spirits.

Originally it was said that the Banshee only keened for the families; O’Grady, O’Neill, O’Brien, O’Connor and Kavanagh. However, there are stories from various other families and that she particularly favorites those with an ‘O’ or a ‘Mc’ in the surname such as O’Brien or McNeill for example.

Acting Masks (Traditional Chinese theatrical opera)

Tai H o Yin (Brian) - Coventry University

The acting mask is quite closely associated with the “Masquerading” dramatic play of the Tang Dynasty. As the story goes, King Lan Ling of the Northern Qi Kingdom was such a brave and courageous fighter, but his appearance was too handsome that he cannot frighten the enemy. So he would wear a carved wooden mask to lead his army into battle, and triumphed over the enemy like it was never before.

The theatrical drama “King Lan Ling going to battle” of the Tang Dynasty is a depiction of King Lan Ling of the Kingdom of Northern Qi commanding his troupe to launch an attack on the enemy. The stage actors would all wear masks in the performance. Since then, acting masks started to appear in theatrical dramas.

Nowadays, acting masks may be used to convey the facial features and individual personalities of the characters in the play and to enrich the atmosphere of the performance stage, while also enhancing the dramatic effects of the show. For such reasons, the use of colours and the style of painting on the masks all have specific connotations These may be clues to distinguish the good guys from the bad, making it easier for the audience to comprehend the storylines. Some examples are:

Red - righteousness and valour.

Pink - elderly age and senility.

Golden - deities and spirits, or martial characters of foreign origins.

White - crafty crooks and deceitfulness.

Black - alludes to forthrightness, candidness and moral decency.

Questions:
1. Does the font work with the poster?
2. Is there too many words?
3. Any improvements?

Miriam Goldshtayn - Coventry Uni

One of the most popular Bulgarian folklore tales. It is telling a story of three brothers, who inherit a golden apple from their father. Unfortunately, every year a dragon comes and steals the apple. Each brother tries to stop the dragon, but only the youngest one has the courage to follow the dragon and take back his apple. He goes on a long adventure, and on his way discovers forgotten virtues such as faith, hope and love. He rediscovers friendship and wisdom, and with all these in his heart he manages to defeat the dragon and take his precious golden apple back. This is a tale for the roots and the heritage that we have from our ancestors, a tale integrating the Bulgarian folk art and traditions, and thus resulting in a fairy, magical story.

A classic Scandinavian folklore about a creature that torments people and creatures as they sleep causing them to have horrible nightmares (where the word nightmare comes from). Whilst most the time it is harmless it can leave a small token which indicates that someone in that family will die a horrible slow death. The creature comes from a race of werewolves who appear as skinny young women with long hair and nail, wearing a long dark cloak. They can transform into sand and slip through the smallest gap meaning you can never escape them. This creature is the original bogeyman and where many beliefs of the story come from. The poster is aimed to make people realise where the modern English word of nightmare originates and why it has been given the name. This is a story from all over northeastern Europe as well as similar tales from the UK.

How do you shade cloth properly?
Do they eyes stick out too much?
Should i have used an older scroll?

by Adriana Chirita - Coventry University

The story that I have chosen to depict here is that of the 'Muma Padurii' which means 'The Mother of the Forest'.

She is a spirit of the forest in a very ugly and old woman's body. Sometimes she has the ability to change her shape. She lives in a dark, dreadful, hidden little house. She is thought to attack children, and because of this, a large variety of spells areused against her. This (step-) mother of the forest kidnaps little children and enslaves them. In one of the popular stories, at some point, she tries to boil a little girl alive, in a soup. However, the little girl's brother outsmarts Muma Padurii and pushes the woman-monster in the oven instead, similar to the story of Hansel and Gretel. The story ends on a happy note when all kids are free to go back to their parents.

I have decided to use hand-drawn illustration and afterward used photoshop to adjust the colours and give it an even more green tint to it. The illustration depicts my take on the mother of the forest with dark, slimy, green hair and leaves who is silently watching from behind a tree. Also, the font used for the title is 'Arhaic' which is a medieval Romanian font and is part of our culture (it was used for church inscriptions back in the day and now is recognised as something specific for Romanian typography)

Someday, in a little village called Pening, there was a big dinner party and the people hunted for a meat. But unfortunately, there were no animals to be seen. The people was full of disappointment until they found Baru Klinthing in the form of dragon while they got back to the village. Then, the people killed dragon Baru Klinthing and used his meat as a dinner party. Then, Baru Klinthing transformed to a poor, dirty, and smelly little boy and came into that village. He was hungry and weak, and he came to ever people’s house for a food, but nobody wanted to help the little boy. Then, there was an old woman who is generous and gave Baru Klinthing shelter and a meal. Baru Klinthing thanked the old woman and told that he wanted to take a revenge to the Pening’s people. By challenging the people to pull a stick that Baru Klinthing attached in a ground, but nobody could, until Baru Klinthing himself pull the stick and suddenly a water came out from the hole, flooded and sank the village under water.
