In 1642, a law was passed in Massachusetts that required parents to their children. The Old Deluder Satan Act was passed in 1647 gave the government the obligation of educating children when the parent could not do so themselves. This was made since people believed that if children could not read, then they would miss interpret scripture. I ranked this first since this was the first step to a form of public education.

Recent Asia American immigrants had little knowledge of the English Language with about 77% of them speaking a language other than English. This language barrier could eventually lead to students dropping out of school. In the case of Lau vs Nichols, the Supreme Court ruled that schools should provide special instruction in order to better learning and create equal learning opportunities. I ranked this third since it gave children who did not speak english an opportunity to learn.

Brown vs Board of Education overturned the ruling in Plessy vs Ferguson that segregated the schools based on race. In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled that students of all races should be allowed to go to the same schools so all the students could have the same standard of education. I ranked this second since this began the desegregation of schools entirely throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1874, the courts of Michigan ruled that the school district would have the ability to tax the public in order to fund all the schools. This includes secondary school as well, which was considered a luxury before it was funded. I ranked this fourth since I know that the subject I want to teach, music, requires lots of funding not only from the schools but from the kids as well.

In 1821, the first public high school was created. All high schools were ran by the public. These schools were made to extend the education from elementary schools. The only people who were allow to these schools were people who could pay the tuition fees. It was truly a luxury until the ruling of the Kalamazoo case which required the public to fund this school as well. I ranked the number five since secondary education is important for basic knowledge.
