I have decided to recreate this photo taken by Lauren Marttila called "FREE LOVE". I chose this photo because of the beautiful pastel colors, and the hazy ocean view in the back, which I think will be challenging yet fun to paint.

After lots of thinking and research, I finally settled on an image that I truly felt emotionally connected to. There are tons of images that are visually awe-inspiring and very much artistically resonate with me. However, there aren’t very many images that I feel emotionally connected to, in a way where the image feels like it represents some part of my identity or my experiences. One film I watched that really spoke to me was Wang Kar Wai’s Chungking Express. Growing up seeing Faye Wong on the TV, it was exciting for me to see how celebrated this very honest representation of Hong Kong is in critical acclaim. The scene this still image is from, when Faye is cleaning the policeman’s apartment, visually reflects the visual tone of the very apartment I used to live in as a child. As well as watching her childlike spirit, wearing an ill-fitted gown I saw my aunties wear all the time (complete with the pink rubber gloves)— I knew this image was definitely the inspiration for my next painting.

This is a still life by the russian photographer, tatyana karachkova. I love the use of traditional russian silverware and the berries featured, called redcurrant that I ate a lot of in my childhood. I think by choosing a still life like this, i can really focus on my skills with values and lighting. i also love the contrast with the red berries, the white wood and the black background. i think this will make a very dynamic panting.
