Er zijn ook nog kleinere ketens (zie foto rechts). Het gebergte beslaat ongeveer een derde van het land. Er groeien in de vlaktes vooral agaves, bromelia’s en cactussen, zoals de kandelaarcactus en de meloencactus. De vochtiger dalen hebben een gevarieerde vegetatie, waaronder verschillende soorten orchideeën en bromelia’s. Op 4500 meter hoogte groeit de zeldzame reuzenbromelia Puya raimondi. Tot 5000 meter komt een van de hoogst groeiende bomen voor, de qeñoa of polylepisboom, samen met grote lupines en de rimarina, een beschermde ranonkelsoort. Bijzonder zijn ook de yaretas, mossen die dicht op elkaar groeien in bolvormige structuren. In de Andes zijn ook vele soorten maïs en aardappelen te vinden. Van de maïs kennen we 49 soorten, van de aardappel zijn honderden wilde en gekweekte soorten bekend.
