Have a look at this example of a classroom action research project and try to reflect based on the following questions: What other intervention could be considered for this topic? Based on your suggestion, please provide also your ideas regarding the data collection methods. Provide your answers here.

Not really sure what else could have been done. Perhaps do some formative testing during the implementation period to check the way students were learning and readapt/readjust her lesson plan. This could be done in different ways: orally, written short tests, small tasks to assess Ss’ understanding of the subject. This would give her an extra feedback on how well the Ss were learning.

However, as I am still struggling to find a key topic for my Action Plan Research, what I found most important in this video was the fact that “Action Research projects do not always go according to plan. They tend not to be predictable and become messy.” This assured me that although I have to present a plan this coming Monday, I can change it to adjust to my findings or new interests. Because definitely, whatever comes from this it “will always involve new learnings”.

Throughout the intervention period, she chatted with the children about the skills they were using to solve the problems and the difficulties that arose for them. She made notes of the conversations with her pupils and recorded their views of the coding lessons and the challenges that arose for them. All these reflections create a path to manage what she wanted to do in the beginning. Maybe she could have worked with a small group to implement some mid-tests if she wanted to increase the test scores. Her pre and post tests being invalid, does not mean so much in this case. Because she get a new learning for herself. So I see it as a successful intervention.

I really think the research was very well planned and she recorded all the data she obtained. She even kept a journal. I would not add anything to this research. She informed her students about what they were going to do and also informed the parents. I liked the idea that she became a colleague to the students and I reckon the presence of the assistant gave her the aid needed with the young learners who participated in the research.
It is really important that the students gained confidence in tackling problems and I think the relationship she established with her learners was crucial to perform research in the classroom.

It seems that this is an almost perfect example of an action research except for one point and I mean the post-test. If the tasks for the pre-test and post-test were better designed and selected based on the same criteria / type / difficulty level, the research would have been an absolute success. And this is always the most important factor when pre-tests and post-tests are applied.

Siobhan, the teacher of the example shown in the video, has operated correctly: she has introduced a new practice (coding) to test its contribution to the improvemnet of mathematical skills in her pupils, she ha used a reflective journal , she has establidhed criteria, she has collected data, she also has explored literature on inclusion to arise her own knoledge on the topic. She has also given pre and post tests to the students, she had frequent meetings with her critical friends. She also was able to go over disappointment when she examined the post test results of her student's math classwork. In my opinion she operated in a perfect way, nothing to suggest to improve the AR path she planned and realized

Nothing to suggest but I've appreciated a lot the mood created by the teacher thanks to this AR. An example of peer education even between students and teacher

I liked the advice that action research can be 'messy'. It can be daunting carrying out research as a teacher as we are not trained to be researchers but teachers therefore it is also a new skill for us and takes time to learn. I liked listening to how this teacher's research project unfolded. As I was listening I also thought that collecting data on students opinions, thoughts and behaviors would have been necessary as opposed to only using a test score to validate the research. Especially with the topics of Math problem solving, the using of skills / strategies used by the pupils could have perhaps been a better indicator of the success of the project also. For example if the teacher had assessed how many strategies the pupils used to solve math problems at the beginning and then at the end if they had a broader range of strategies. It was interesting to hear how valuable the teacher's reflective journal was to the process and how it influenced her own view of the project. It was a very worthwhile video.
