It allows access to international audiences at the touch of a button to giving direct engagement between artists and fans

Social media platforms have transformed young people’s use of music. These mediated environments alter how young people consume, identify, and connect with music. Social media platforms further emphasize a social relationship to music. Young people can use social media to present their musical preferences, connect with others who share their musical affinities, and even communicate with musicians and celebrities. In this chapter, we discuss how music and social media intersect in the context of three developmental tasks that young people face. We focus on social development, identity development, including personal and social identities, and physical development as three key developmental tasks that mark and affect young people’s growth. Social media provide tools and environments for these developmental tasks, and music can play a role in how young people use social media to negotiate these developmental tasks. The chapter maps existing literature on the interplay between music, adolescent development, and social media, and identifies research directions that are yet to be addressed.

I cannot agree with the assessment that Chinese pop music is universally "terrible." Musical preferences are highly subjective, and what one person finds enjoyable, another may not. Chinese pop music encompasses a wide range of styles and artists, many of whom have achieved significant popularity and critical acclaim, both within China and internationally.

That said, I understand the sentiment that uniquely Chinese cultural products can sometimes struggle to gain traction outside of their home country. This may be due to a variety of factors, such as language barriers, differences in cultural context and references, or challenges in distribution and marketing globally.

However, I would encourage you to approach Chinese pop music and culture with an open mind. There is a wealth of diversity and creativity within the Chinese music scene, from traditional folk styles to contemporary fusion genres. Many Chinese artists have gained global recognition and success, demonstrating the potential for unique cultural expressions to resonate internationally.

My recommendation would be to explore Chinese pop music with an open and curious mindset, rather than dismissing it outright. Seek out recommendations from trusted sources, read reviews, and listen to a variety of artists and styles. You may be surprised to find pieces that captivate and intrigue you, offering a window into the rich cultural tapestry of China.

One approach is listening to music or having background noise while studying.

A recent survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of CSU Global, an online university, explored the correlation between music and studying. Approximately half of the participants (49%) reported listening to music regularly while studying, with 60% stating that they found studying more effective with background sound rather than in silence.

The youthful section of the society is particularly taken by KPOP. They actively support their favourite groups by buying merch, organising fan festivals and even participating in promotional events organised by the entertainment agencies. This embeds a sense of team spirit in them. Mingling with like-minded people from different social groups makes them more open minded and accepting even in their lives outside of KPOP. They exchange their views, talk about their own culture and learn about others’. They are more confident in expressing themselves and their culture as well as accepting others’. This knowledge also comes in handy when they start working for multinational organisations. The agencies and artists also make sure to integrate other cultures in their art pieces to cater to their diverse fan base. KPOP has also become an incentive for people to learn Korean, so as to not be lost in the lyrics and feel closer to their favourite idols. Learning a new language has always been considered a positive feat and it adds another feather to their career hat.

Most of the KPOP stans condemn racism and even educate the people around them. The recent Black Lives Movement has proved the active participation and support the KPOP community shows towards the events outside their area of interest. Some even went extra mile to ask their idols and agencies to use their presence and support the cause. They used their influence on social media, putting aside the fan wars to voice the plight of black people. This clearly shows that they are aware of differences in culture and understand the sensitivity it brings. Even the artists from time to time promote positive ideas and come forward when required. They use their music to spread love and positive vibes. KPOP also helps people’s inner artists come out and show their appreciation for their favourite idols. They make various fan arts, write fan fictions, and even make remixes of their favourite songs. It induces them to learn art that may or may not be completely outside their career prospects.

Rap and hip-hop came into being at a time when African-American communities in New York City and elsewhere were being neglected by municipal governments and falling into poverty. Rap music gave a voice and an empowering sense of identity to young people who felt like no one was listening to them. The language used is not just coarse but profoundly damaging, embedding harmful stereotypes and dangerous behaviors into the consciousness of impressionable listeners like my young grandchildren, who are increasingly exposed to this kind of so-called entertainment and content. The fact that rappers create explicit, violent lyrics against women to assert dominance over them and prove their authenticity as gangsters is not for me.

Women are routinely depicted as objects for male pleasure, their worth reduced to their physical appearance and sexual availability. Yes, this also happened when I was younger, but it was never like it is today. There were no curse words in the music that I grew up listening to. Today, the words that rhyme with witch with a B and door with a W are the norm.

Johnny Cash - "A Boy Named Sue" (1969)

Johnny Cash - "A Boy Named Sue". Courtesy Columbia

Johnny Cash's only top 10 pop single is the story of a man made tough by having to struggle with growing up with a girl's name. Written by Shel Silverstein, best known for children's books, the story in "A Boy Named Sue" talks about the man searching for the father who gave him the name and the ensuing fight when they finally meet again. It is also notable for including the line "son of a b*tch" which was censored from the 45 release of the song and the original LP version.

Johnny Cash recorded the hit version of "A Boy Named Sue" live at San Quentin prison. It was a cross-format smash hit topping both the country and adult contemporary charts while reaching #2 on the pop chart. Shel Silverstein later wrote a follow up "The Father of a Boy Named Sue" to tell the story from the father's point of view.

Watch Video

02

of 10

Elton John - "The B*tch Is Back" (1974)

Elton John - "The B*tch Is Back". Courtesy MCA

The word "bitch" is one with a very colorful history in pop music. Elton John was at the peak of his popularity when he released the single "The B*tch Is Back" in 1974. According to Elton John, the song is highly autobiographical. A number of pop radio stations in the U.S. refused to play the "The B*tch Is Back" due to the offending word. The program director of New York's WPIX-FM spoke for many in the business stating, "We won't play those types of records no matter how popular they get." As a result, "The B*tch Is Back" merely peaked at #4 in the U.S. instead of #1 or #2 like Elton John's three other single releases in 1974.

Meredith Brooks presented even more of a challenge to pop radio programmers in 1997 with the release of her single "B*tch." However, it overcame reluctance and censorship at pop radio to eventually hit #2. As recently as Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" in 2009, "b*tch" was treated as a bad word in pop songs.

03

of 10

Who - "Who Are You" (1978)

Who - Who Are You. Courtesy MCA

One of the first obvious uses of the "f" word in a mainstream pop song occurs twice in the Who's "Who Are You." The line, "Who the f**k are you?" is heard twice in the original album release and the U.K. single edit. For U.S. pop radio ears, the offending word was completely eliminated and "Who Are You" peaked at #14 on the pop chart. However, the lines are preserved in the promotional music video below.

In 2005, the song raised concerns again when the Who included the offending word in their Live 8 performance, and it was not censored on the ABC broadcast. In the face of stronger crackdowns on radio in the U.S. by the FCC, many stations now play the edited version of "Who Are You."

04

of 10

Dead Kennedys - "Too Drunk To F**k" (1981)

Dead Kennedys - "Too Drunk To F**k".Courtesy Cherry Red

How to handle the "f" word in the title of a song that hits the top 40? That is what faced those who compile the U.K. pop charts when the Dead Kennedys climbed into the pop top 40 in the summer of 1981 becoming the first hit with the "f" word in the title. The song was immediately banned from being played on the radio by the BBC. Some stores refused to stock the single with the title on the cover, while others sold a version with a sticker over the offending word. A helpful sticker provided by the band read, "Caution: You are the victim of yet another stodgy retailer afraid to warp your mind by revealing the title of this record so peel slowly and see..." Charts listed the song as "Too Drunk To."

Watch Video

05

of 10

Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing" (1985)

Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing". Courtesy Warner Bros.

Dire Straits' leader Mark Knopfler wrote much of the #1 smash hit "Money For Nothing" based on language he actually heard from delivery men watching MTV. However, the use of the word "f*ggot" in the line, "That little faggot with the earring and the makeup," offended many. At times, the entire verse is expurgated from the song when it is played on the radio. Mark Knopfler has spoken about the difficulties this issue raises in having it understood that a song is not always written in first person but can be depicting the words of others.

In January 2011, the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled that the original unedited version of "Money For Nothing" could not be broadcast due to the use of the word "f*ggot." However, in August 2011, following a wave of protests, the council ruled that individual radio stations could make their own decisions about playing the song.

Watch Video

06

of 10

Eminem - "The Real Slim Shady" (2000)

Eminem - "The Real Slim Shady". Courtesy Interscope

In this broad parody, Eminem took aim at a wide range of pop culture targets. Among those are the fear of explicit language in a pop song. The result is a range of edited versions of the song and the video depending on which of the smorgasbord of offending words someone finds most offensive. The video below does eliminate some of the most objectionable words. When the dust settled, this became Eminem's first top 5 pop hit. The recording also won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.

Based on the evidence I gathered that pop music can reduce stress, it does show that stress is significantly reduced and moods are boosted by listening to pop music. it can increase the mood and decrease anxiety levels by sending good vibes through music being listened. Any kind of music that has an upbeat tone can help reduce stress levels, like for example, songs from your favourite artist or songs from your favourite musical. in my opinion, it is better to listen to musicals because it has more perspective.

They have over 1 million listeners on each Saga. (My favourite is the Wisdom Saga, but the cover art is not on the picture i sent. My fav song from the Wisdom Saga is ‘Love In Paradise’ :] )

Music has a significant impact on teenagers on social media, influencing their behaviors, identities, and interactions in various ways. Here’s how different types of music can affect teens on social media:

1. Identity and Self-Expression

Positive: Music allows teenagers to express their personalities and emotions. Sharing favorite songs, playlists, or creating music-related content helps them communicate their identity and connect with like-minded peers.

Negative: There can be pressure to conform to certain musical trends or genres to fit in with social groups, which may impact self-esteem or lead to a superficial sense of belonging.

2. Social Trends and Influence

Positive: Music trends on social media can introduce teens to new genres and artists, fostering cultural exchange and broadening their musical horizons.

Negative: The popularity of certain music genres or artists can sometimes create exclusivity or peer pressure, making teens feel compelled to follow trends rather than enjoy music authentically.

3. Emotional Impact

Positive: Music often serves as an emotional outlet. Teens may use social media to share songs that reflect their feelings or to find solace and connection through music-related content.

Negative: Music with negative or violent themes might influence attitudes or behaviors, and exposure to such content on social media can sometimes reinforce negative emotions or behaviors.

4. Social Connections

Positive: Music can help teenagers form and strengthen social connections. They might bond over shared musical tastes, collaborate on music-related projects, or participate in fan communities.

Negative: Social media can also amplify divisions or conflicts based on musical preferences, with fandoms sometimes engaging in heated debates or cyberbullying.

5. Creativity and Content Creation

Positive: Teens often use social media to showcase their creativity through music, whether by sharing their own performances, creating music videos, or participating in viral challenges related to music.

Negative: The pressure to produce viral content can sometimes lead to a focus on quantity over quality, and there can be concerns about originality and the influence of algorithm-driven trends.

6. Marketing and Consumption

Positive: Social media platforms are powerful tools for discovering new music and artists. Teens can follow their favorite musicians, stay updated on new releases, and access exclusive content.

Negative: There can be an overemphasis on commercial aspects of music, with teens being targeted by advertisements and marketing strategies that promote consumption rather than genuine enjoyment.

7. Cultural and Social Issues

Positive: Music often addresses social and cultural issues. Teenagers may use social media to discuss and advocate for causes related to the messages in their favorite songs.

Negative: Music-related content on social media can sometimes perpetuate stereotypes or misinformation, impacting teens' perceptions of social and cultural issues.

In summary, music on social media profoundly affects teenagers, shaping their identities, social interactions, and emotional experiences. The impact can be both enriching and challenging, depending on how music and social media are navigated.

This review elaborates on the influence of music on the psychological well-being of adolescents, covering the potential advantages, drawbacks, and necessary strategic interventions associated with music exposure. Initially, we characterize music and delve into a multifaceted classification system. Music, as a pervasive art form, is categorized based on regional and national parameters, and it also distinguishes through the assorted genres and traits. The mental well-being of adolescents is significantly influenced by music through mechanisms such as the facilitation of emotional expression and regulation, fortification of social bonds and the sense of belonging, as well as the fostering of creativity and cognitive development. Nonetheless, music, if misused or associated with inappropriate content, could elicit a spectrum of issues ranging from auditory impairment, diversion of attention, addiction tendencies, to the induction of negative emotions. To counteract these potential hazards, we propose several mitigation strategies including the selection of appropriate music styles, the establishment of a wholesome music environment, the promotion of the constructive role of music education, and fostering active participation in music activities among the youth. In conclusion, we underscore the necessity of a collaborative endeavor from all sectors of society to ensure a healthy music environment for the youth, which in turn would enhance the positive influence of music on the mental health development of this population.
