Check out these five facts about International Day of Peace:

  1. It was established in 1981 by a resolution of the U.N. General Assembly.
  2. This year, leaders met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, renewing political commitment to preserve the environment.
  3. To celebrate the day, the “Peace Bell” is rung at the UN Headquarters in New York City. The peace bell is made out of coins donated by children from all over the world, and was a gift from the UN Association of Japan.
  4. Today, the UN calls on people everywhere to observe a minute of silence, at noon local time, to honor the victims of war – those who have lost their lives, and those who survived.
  5. There is a concert in Wembley Arena in London, with performances by Elton John and James Morrison, and an appearance by Jude Law to celebrate International Day of Peace 2012.
