Of course, having been modeled by some very caring teachers and some very, very strict ones as well, thanks to them, I am who I am today.

Reflecting on My Five-Year Teaching Journey at Opera Estate Primary School

From the early days of my practicum to my official posting, Opera Estate Primary School has been a significant part of my teaching journey over the past five years. It was here that I laid the foundation of my career – a place where I grew not only as an educator but also as a leader.

Working alongside a team of dedicated and supportive colleagues, I came to truly understand the demands of teaching students with diverse abilities and the importance of working closely with parents. These experiences sharpened my teaching skills, deepened my empathy, and taught me how to adapt and lead effectively in a dynamic school environment.

I also learned how to fall – sometimes quite literally – and get back up stronger. One unforgettable memory was when we, led by the incredible Carmen, emerged as Champion House. That moment was more than just a win; it was a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, and school spirit.

Above all, I am immensely proud of my ex-students. Watching them grow and soar in their own unique ways has been the most rewarding part of this journey. To see them achieve and thrive affirms why we do what we do as educators.

Opera Estate will always hold a special place in my heart. It has shaped me, challenged me, and prepared me for the road ahead. Thank you for the memories and the many lessons – both in the classroom and beyond.

Today, as we celebrate our school’s journey- from the past to the present- I am proud to be part of this vibrant and united family. Here's to the teachers who inspired us, the friends who supported us, and the experiences that made us who we are.

Happy celebrations, OEPS! Once a part of the OEPS family, always a part of its story.

Opera was more than just a school to me—it was a second home. They used to tell us that, and now I truly understand what it means. It was the place where I nurtured my curiosity, built my confidence, and laid the groundwork for the person I’ve become. From morning assemblies to classroom lessons, those everyday moments have become lasting memories.

Some of my fondest experiences were during CCA sessions, where I learned the value of dedication, resilience, and teamwork—lessons that have stayed with me over the years and continue to guide me.

Even after all this time, I still carry the morals and values I gained from OEPS wherever I go. The atmosphere, the warmth of the community, and the support from teachers have left a deep and lasting impression that I will always be grateful for. Not everyone is lucky enough to have such a meaningful experience in primary school—but I certainly was.

Wishing continued success and growth to OEPS that has shaped so many young minds, including our little ones. Thank you for 40 years of dedication, learning, and love. Here’s to many more years of inspiring futures!

While many of the memories shared here are of the classes, lessons and teachers, my memories are of the friends I made and experiences I'd out of the classroom.

I remember being reprimanded by my teacher, the late Mrs Joyce De Silva for coming back to class in a muddy pinafore after recess because I was catching tadpoles in the school field with the boys.😅

I remember having my first fall outside the school trying to cross the mini concrete 'bridge' outside the main gate facing Fidelio Street, 'just for fun'.

I remember picking guava fruit from the Science garden and panicking when the police came (obviously for other reasons). 😆

I remember the smell of the school bookshop, the taste of the yummy 10 cents lime syrup in the school canteen.

I remember the music lessons with Mrs De Silva. This was where my love for music started.

I remember the table tennis sessions, my Primary 5 form teacher, the late Mr Chan Foon Yau made us have because he was in charge of table tennis.

This was where my love for table tennis ended. 🫣

My late dad was from OEBS and mum's from OEGS and so were some of my aunties. I am fortunate and proud that 3 of my kids had graduated from OEPS and 2 are currently studying here.

Teachers play an important role and some names will forever be imbedded in my heart like Cikgu Rabiah, Cikgu Mariam, Cikgu Sogiyah, Mr Peters, Mdm Jenny Lo, Mrs DeSilva, Mrs Margaret Lee and many others.

As neighbours, Bethany Evangelical Free Church is honoured to share a rich heritage with OEPS, rooted in our shared history and community.

We're proud to note that one of our founding members, Leong Bi Lan, was the very first Head Prefect of Opera Estate Girls School back in the 1960s. Over the years, we've seen multiple generations of families from our church attend OEPS, fostering a deep connection between our institutions.

In recent years, our partnership has grown stronger through initiatives like after-school reading programs, distributing over 300 OEPS Love Gift packages to support students from financially challenged backgrounds, and providing annual bursaries. These efforts reflect our commitment to being good neighbours and supporting the community.

We look forward to continuing our collaboration and exploring new ways to serve together. Here's to many more years of shared growth and partnership!
