What counts as literacy today? Literacy goes far beyond text media. Literacy today includes forms of media such as music, drama, dance, television, commercials, visual art, and folklore. The transmediation aspect of literacy combines different viewpoints such as connecting cooking with food science or expressing our understanding of a text through music or movements. It's important to be aware that different cultures interpret literacies in different ways. Students need the freedom to express themselves using a wide variety of forms of literacies which helps students connect with what they are learning as well as each other.

Multiple Literacies is a way of making meaning. It could include body language, the way we speak, etc. Literacy means different things to different groups depending on their contexts. Different cultural groups have different ways of making meaning.

Transmediation: Movement of meaning from one sign system to another. It involved taking what you know in language and moving that knowledge to another system such as arts, music, etc. Transmediation can support student comprehension and help motivate them in a way. For examples the kid who may not feel comfortable writing a summary could sketch out his comprehension instead.

Critical literacy is about analyzing it, rather accepting. It revolves around social justice themes such as dominance, access, diversity, etc.

Global literacy includes an overlapping of different concepts. Different groups make different meaning, so it involves students to analyze different issues from different perspectives.
