Bipolar I- involves periods of severe mood episodes from mania to depression.

Bipolar II- a milder form of mood elevation, involving milder episodes of hypomania to periods of severe depression.

  • The typical age of onset is the late teens or early 20s, although it can come in childhood or as late as 40's and 50's.
    • Diagnosis: 
    • Men and Women are equally affected. 
    • Bipolar disorder affects people of all races, ethnic groups and socio-economic backgrounds.
    • Bipolar Disorder is commonly under diagnosed because people with mildest form of it, are more likely treated for other health conditions such as depression or substance abuse.

    • Bipolar disorder is more common in people who have a first-degree relative with the condition, such as a sibling or parent.
