How Can We Keep Toddlers Quiet During a Flight?

You work for a large international airline. Your boss learned you know about child development and has asked you to create a bag of toys that would quietly entertain small travelers on long flights. The bag must be small enough to store in tight compartments of the plane and the toys must be able to be played with at a seat. So, you get to work and this is what you come up with.

Items #1 and #2: Crayons and Small Notepad

This is small and compact, so it would fit in the plane's small seating area. The notepad allows the toddler to draw on it with the crayons, and the crayons must be non-toxic. This activity will help the toddler with their dexterity, as well as with their imagination. They will be able to improve their fine motor skills through practicing holding a crayon, and with the freedom to draw whatever they'd like, they will be able to express their creativity. With multiple colors of crayons available, this will also help toddlers with their attention spans, since they can create more things will different colors.

Item #3: Small Picture Book

This is an activity that both the parent and the toddler can do together. As the parent reads to their child, the child can listen and look at the pictures. This helps with attention span, as the toddler will be able to focus on their parent's voice and the pictures. If the parent asks the toddler questions about the book, the toddler can also practice their memory skills by answering those questions about the book. Reading can also help the toddler in the curiosity aspect and problem-solving aspect. A problem may come up in the book and out of curiosity, the toddler may wonder why the character did what they did and how the character can fix that problem. Reading allows the toddler to practice their critical thinking skills.

All toddlers like stuffed animals. They're soft and fun to play with. By providing toddlers with a small stuffed animal, they will be able to express their creativity and use their imagination. They will be able to come up with their own stories, characters, and scenarios unique to them. They will incorporate things they see or do in their everyday life into these stories and may turn the experience into pretend play. With stuffed toys, toddlers will also be able to develop their sense of perception. Stuffed toys have various textures and they can explore these textures.

Toddlers should be provides with a small puzzle with many colors but not too many pieces. The colors will help keep them focused and this will help increase their attention span. A puzzle will also help a toddler practice their problem solving skills as they try to put the pieces into the right places. In order to place the pieces into their places, toddlers also need hand-eye coordination, which this activity can help with.

A small toy car would allow a toddler to use their imagination and creativity. They can pretend play with different scenarios using the same car and keep themselves entertained. This would also help them with their sense of perception because toy cars have many textures. The outside of the car is different than the wheels of the car, so those present different textures. The toddler can also practice their hand-eye coordination skills, as well as their dexterity with this car. They can practice their grip on small objects, as well as move the car where they want it to go.

The colors and lights on this ball will help toddlers expand their attention span. They will be intrigued by how this ball lights up and try to figure out how to make it light up. The texture of this ball is also very squishy, so the toddler will be able to use their sense of perception. The ball itself is squishy on the outside with squishy sticks on the outside, but hard and solid in the inside because of the ball of light. Toddlers will also be able to practice their fine motor skills through playing with this ball. They will use their hand muscles to squish the ball and release it.
