Jamie: Yes, It Can Be Fun

I've been working feverishly on my own presentation, and I think that, in spite of the very serious work that students can do with this model, that yes - doing something because it's fun is a compelling reason to do it. Students learn how to use a new tool, they learn how to respond to others in a new way, and even if it's a mess the first time, well, hey - ain't that called a "draft" when you're writing? A colleague of mine suggested this application for distance learning and I think I was overwhelmed with new tech tools back then, but I'm definitely adding this to my repertoire next year. Thanks for this!

Jamie, this was informative and useful in multiple ways. I appreciate your expertise in first explaining the tech to us so clearly and with demos and also explaining the lesson and goals. This is what I think can be daunting for teachers and cause us to avoid new tech. But you've made it accessible to us and applicable in a variety of ways. You also have a wonderful presentation style! Good luck in the new school next year! --Daina

Great use of a burgeoning tool.

I have used flipgrid many times, going back well before the shutdown. However, you're thoughtful use of the tool really expands student access to argumentative thinking and writing. As someone said about the math demo, writing can become decoration easily. That's even more true for tech tools, and yet you have leveraged the tool to do something that a face-to-face discussion can't sdo. It empowers the shy and those that cannot quickly develop a verbal rebuttal, and allows all students to develop and hone their own process to make learning happen!

It is clear that you are a very organized teacher that provides her students with clear goals and expectations. I can't wait to get my students using FlipGrid more next year as we navigate what the 2020-2021 school year might look like.

I can see so many ways that Flipgrid could be used in online and regular classrooms. The program is easy to use and can be helpful in the drafting and even peer response phases of the writing process. You've shown an effective and fun way to develop and respond to varied perspectives. Thank you for the good resources and examples of how Flipgrid could be used across content areas. Your presentation was organized and well-paced. Thank you! You and your presentation are Fabulous!
Brooke

This was such a well thought-out, seamless presentation. I admit I was skeptical of the activity at first-- I thought students were going to just dump in other people's points. But I had the same experience as Daina: when I watched Cody's video, I had to concede his point! It fostered my thinking. Thank you for this tool! I'm going to try it out-- our LMS has a terrible video tool.
--Lisa
