The Mexican American War was from 1846-1848. This war occurred because in the year of 1845, John C. Frémont led a military expedition to California, which violated Mexico's territorial rights. Mexico responded by troops crossing the Rio Grande and killing 11 U.S. soldiers. Immediately after this occurred Polk declared war and congress approved of this. This is when the war between Mexico and the United States began. On February 2, 1848 Mexico and the U.S. signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty affected the United States and Mexico since Mexico would give the U.S. present day California, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and most if Arizona, and parts of Colorado & Wyoming.

On January 24, 1848 James Marshall found shiny particles laying near John Sutter's sawmill, which was located in California Sierra Nevada mountains. Marshall took this to Sutter who confirmed to him that what he found was gold. Later more workers found gold near the mill. Word spread around and thus began the gold rush.
