Dunraven site has been occupied since the Iron age when there was a Celtic settlement on the clifftops. Stone buildings were also erected here by the Normans.

Settlements were first recorded in the area in 1542, using the defensive position of the witch's nose.

The castle was sold to the Wyndham family in 1642 Dunraven castle (more of a manor house in reality) was altered in 1803 and castellated by the addition of turrets and towers, creating more of a castle sort of building. This was carried out by Thomas and Ann Wyndham.

The Victorian interest in horticulture inspired the development of a conservatory of exotic plants, and the development of a walled garden, to protect these plants from marauders and wild animals. The addition of an ice house to the grounds displayed wealth as these were very expensive to have and maintain.

An extra wing to the castle was also added in the 1880's for servant use.

Over time as it was no longer occupied without future heirs, the castle fell into ruin and was demolished in 1963 as it was unsafe.

The Glamorgan Heritage Coastline consists of a 22km stretch of coastline, designated a heritage coastline in 1972 due to its Geology, fossils and important habitats.

Southerndown Surf School operates on the beach front during the summer months, and the beach is manned by RNLI lifeguards during peak seasons. The vast sandy beach is frequented by tourists for swimming, sunbathing, beach games, rock pool exploring and walks. Rock climbers also regularly climb the sedimentary cliffs of the witch's nose. The other cliffs circling the bay are unstable and several signs are in place warning the public of collapsing cliffs and to stay well away.

Botany includes:
- Quaking grass
- Rock Rose
