Becoming a Servant Leader

A servant leader is someone I aspire to be; I find they are the most admirable type of leader. However, I scored higher as an authoritarian leader, because I usually like to be the voice of direction and control the situation. My goal is to work towards being the kind of leader who transcends self interest to serve others and leads with selflessness; a leader who cares deeply about the well being, development and growth of the ones they are leading. The day I land in a management position, I want to be able to focus on the emotional and material wealth of other people, and less of myself. Instead of meeting my own tasks and deadlines, I want to prioritize my team members first; and instead of focusing on how to make myself excel at one thing, find a way to make my team excel at numerous things. My motive is that I want my followers to want to follow me, not because they have too. I want to be able to lead with influence (love), and not authority (fear).

I have noticed, I have found myself sometimes speaking over other ideas and missing out on what other people have to say. With doing this, as a team we can be losing out on possibilities, opportunities or an even greater idea. So, one of my action strategies as a servant leader is to truthfully and authentically listen to others, and really expand my openess. I will let everyone finish what they are saying and let the conversation go on as long as possible without me interrupting with opinion or feedback, as this may stop a persons train of thought or flow of discussion. Also, this reassures people that their opinion is valuable and what they have to say is meaningful. Acknowledgement of others is key with this strategy.

Another action strategy is to lead with my heart, using empathy to understand other people's feelings, motives and situations. As a person, I get very wrapped up in tasks and deadlines, and I tend to forget I am also dealing with people. As I am on the structural side, and not on the human resource side, I want to work on becoming more involved, supportive and invested in people. Next team session, I will observe how my personality affects others and be able to use that emotional information to guide my thinking and behaviour towards them. This way, I will improve my empathetic consideration, be more subjective then objective, and be more likely to build relationships in the work place. I need to be able to form a genuine connection with people because after all, when it comes to the vision and the goal, the most important asset are all the people that are there to make it happen.

My second goal as a leader is to develop the natural ability of appreciative inquiry and to use this method to motivate people. When talking to team mates, colleagues, or even friends and family, I want to be able to speak to these groups in this manner. I truly stand behind this theory of approaching every obstacle with a positive mind set; you must concentrate on what is right, rather then what is wrong. I also believe it makes a huge difference with the impact on your followers as optimism and confidence gives them a sense of hope, rather than being torn down with criticism or pessimism.

He talks in a manner of disappointment and failure of the United States; he states they are weak, helpless and the worst of all countries. Also, as a potential president of the United States he refers multiple times to Japan and China and other countries that are “beating “ them as enemies; Trump states that Korean, Chinese, Mexican, they are all taking our American jobs and it needs to stop.

He talks to his people as if we are all one, “It doesn’t matter if you are black or white, or Hispanic or Asian, or Native American… Rich or Poor… You can make it here in America if you are willing to try”. President Obama talks about the United States with pride and empowerment, and still with the motivation to make it better.

One of my strategies is going to use positive power, and speak with motivating words to bring people up. Before initiating conversation, I really want to think before I speak and find ways to turn anything negative into a positive. For example, I can do this by opening my conversations with a positive message, compliment and good feedback, and then discreetly hint at what we can all do to make us better as a whole in the future. My action strategy is to talk to people in a way that they know they belong in the conversation and so that they feel valued for what they have contributed. I want to make people feel like they are appreciated, therefore, I will strive to do the opposite of what Donald Trump examples, and rein act more of how Barack Obama uses his choice of words.

I find as I use this method of speaking to people and lifting people up, this can lead to the change of good in the people and organization.

I feel as I master this skill I will be also heading towards becoming a charismatic leader. I feel once I have the ability to inspire and motivate people enough to feel good about themselves and do more then they would originally do, this will be a great reward on its own. I believe, when I have this power of influence and I have an emotional impact on people, I will have more access and ease to guiding and coaching them, regardless of the obstacles and challenges. Therefore, the outcomes of this is creating leaders that go beyond doing the bare minimum or satisfactory- it opens doors to being extraordinary.

So far, I have uncovered my leadership journey. I have taken a look at what I personally need to change and the greater impact that I will have on others and myself as a leader. I have realized some major qualities of myself that I need to work on to improve my leadership and team work; however, for the most part I am satisfied with many other areas of my leadership abilities. My four action strategies lie in becoming a better listener, being able to build relationships and relate with empathy, being a positive motivator, and becoming a forward thinker, which I look forward to pursue throughout my life after school. I believe with these four steps I can conquour my objectives and goals in becoming not only a great leader, but a better person as well.
