I was in the States last year, and my phones screen got damaged badly. It needed to be repaired. I took it to an authorized repair shop and they replaced quite a lot many pieces of my phone including the motherboard, which caused my phone to have a different IMEI number than before. Anyway, upon returning to Turkey this summer, I got a scary SMS from BTK in Turkey saying that I needed to register my phone because it looks like it is an American phone. I got really frustrated, however I paid the registration fee, which is a big 1850 TL by the way, and then my phone got locked! I haven't been able to use my phone since 23rd of October.
