A big reason for this is the media. Tobacco companies spend billions of dollars every year promoting their products at stores, in magazines, and online. Most ads show smokers as healthy, energetic and successful. Repeated measures design with surveys two weeks apart. 1000 current smokers aged 18–40 were interviewed. 250 telephone interviews were conducted in each of Sydney and Melbourne (both unexposed at initial survey) and Brisbane and Adelaide (both exposed at initial survey) to measure frequency of negative thoughts about smoking and passive smoking, positive thoughts about smoking, and thoughts about the conduct of tobacco companies; perspective on change; and thoughts and actions about quitting.

Credits: Researching, typing, grammar, punctuation, editing and pain and suffering, Henry.

talking, Cyrus and Jacko

One of the most overlooked issues smoking creates is the damaging impact the use, and subsequent discarding of cigarettes, has on the environment. Second hand smoking goes into the air and degrades air quality. Furthermore cigarettes are the most frequent individual litter item, cigarettes litter the streets, go down gutters and end up in the oceans. The city of San Francisco spent 20 million dollars on cleaning up cigarettes in the streets. But the biggest issue with cigarettes is children or small animals on the street, especially children consuming them, it can cause babies and toddlers irreparable damage to their respiratory system. Cigarettes have 600 chemicals in them, of which 69 have been proven to cause cancer; furthermore once lit, they produce over 7000 chemicals. Cigarettes are highly soluble in water releasing toxic waste into the streams, rivers and eventually oceans. Cigarettes are not biodegradable, as their butts are made of plastic, that once in water disperse into micro plastics. A study conducted by Chicago university found that one cigarette butt with traces of tobacco introduced to one litre of water increased the toxicity levels to extremely high and 50 precent of all fish in there died, just from one little cigarette butt.
