by Robert Frost

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Johnny told Ponyboy to "stay gold" because he wants Pony to stay himself...young, pure, optimistic, sensitive, and caring. Gold in this sense means unique and as you are. He wants him to grow up to be the same great guy he is right now, and to not them the world harden him or bring him down.

This poem could mean any number of things, but as it relates to the book, it is referring to being young, like the dawn, and how everything is always changing and disappearing. Gold is natures hardest color to hold, just like innocence in childhood is hard to hold onto and not becoming jaded by the world. 'Nothing gold can stay' means that everything changes, or leaves, or dissipates, and nothing perfect or beautiful or good can stay in this imperfect world.
