The enfranchisement act in 1857 was to try and assimilate the "Indians" which was what they called any Indigenous person while the act was happening. They tried to confer full canadien citizenship. The Indigenous people would let go of their indigenous citizenship to be aloud to vote and or own property but they would have to let go of their culture. Some Indigenous people had no choice for enfranchisement.
