You need warm, moist air combined with cool, dry air to get air masses to melt. That then creates an unstable atmosphere. Because of this unstable air, it starts to rotate, making a tornado. Derbis usually contributes to this as well.

This shocker happened in 1925, so technology wasn't the best at taking detailed photos then. It was 219 MILES long, in Missouri, Indiana and Illinois. The Tri State Tornado destroyed 15 000 homes, along with 695 deaths and 2 027 injuries.
