Medium: Digital
Dimensions: 24.7 cm x 35.56 cm
Statement: This digital art piece was made by overlapping layers to create shading effects. I want to focus more on geometric shapes to create the male face rather than smoothed out edges. The striking colors are meant to grab the attention of the viewer, especially the warm pinks and the cooler blues. The only parts of the piece that have lines are the hair and eyes to also draw attention to them, as this is a lineless piece.

This is a vibrant art piece which represents an insecurity that a lot of women have, to show that it is normal to have stretchmarks. It represents that the things that some people consider imperfect are perfect, because it is common and beautiful. I used watercolors for this artwork by painting a body of a woman of color and the lined background. The use of watercolors leaves an uneven finish that I thought helps emphasize that it’s okay not to be perfect.

“Breaking from faith” was inspired by the Catholic/Christian story of Lucifer. This is my interpretation of him as an angel, which shows a slow descent of his faith as he becomes more engrossed in himself. The shattered halo is a representation of Lucifer’s faith descending. In the background, we can see pure darkness which symbolizes evil encircling him. I incorporated admirable facial features because as an angel of God, he was both beautiful and graceful. Although he is becoming more self-absorbed and power-hungry, this piece depicts Lucifer still inside heaven and not yet exiled.

The inspiration behind this art piece is about what is happening in the ocean now. Humans have been throwing trash on the ground, the trash gets washed up to the sewers and ends up in the ocean where a lot of sea creatures are at. The sea creatures see the trash as food and when they eat it they can't digest it. The ocean has been polluted for about 49 years already.

This piece is called “Happy Feet,” I was inspired to do this painting because of my own culture. What I drew here is a woman wearing a Folkloric dress, I used pencils and acrylic paint as a medium. I wanted to demonstrate how beautiful and traditional Mexican culture is, as many dedicate their lives dancing on their feet. In Folklorico, Women dance fanning out their skirts rippling them like waves as they are twirling. The colors I chose for my painting are based on the dresses they wear.

Oils (46.2cm x 30.4 cm)
This oil painting is called “Mystical” and I was inspired by my love for nature. I included butterflies in a plum colored light to depict the beauty of nature as well as florals on the girl’s dress. I added stars to show the starry night that shines ever so slightly on her to illuminate her way towards the butterflies. I made her dress a lavender color because it is my favorite color as well as butterflies being my favorite insect. I decided to include a girl that has wonders and curiosity about nature and the world surrounding her because she has this unique interest and care about it. I chose to do oils because I decided to challenge myself to do something different since I have never worked with oils before.

Throughout the years, products meant to reduce imperfections and photo shopped magazines have led many to believe their bodies are flawed, and must be perfected in order to be deemed beautiful. In reality, no body is “perfect”, your body keeps you alive and you should love it, imperfections and all. I wanted to create a piece based on the theme of love, so I created a piece where the subject loves themselves.

I wanted to look tough so I would be accepted by others, this lead me to do stupid stuff just to get others attention. The ripped sweater and muddy pants on this boy symbolize how careless I was about myself, the broken window in the background was intended to give a sensation of destruction and vandalism. I drew the boy specifically in the center so he can be the main point of attraction so viewers can see the facial and body language on this character. The message is that sometimes people try to be something that they're not, that's scary. I chose pencil because it's dope, shading is hard.

"Cherry Dress" is an art piece inspired by the the famous strawberry dress that is often worn by artists and females. The purpose of this art piece is to break the classic stereotypical clothes depending on gender situation. The cherries on the dress are a symbolism to the countless Mexicans who work in the fields for poor pay. The man wearing the dress has no skin tone because he is an albino, which is not considered beautiful in society. And lastly, the colors on the dress and in the background are the colors of the lesbian flag because those in the LGBTQ community are often judged and mistreated by other's homophobia. The materials that were used were graphite pencils, colored pencils, and pens. I was inspired to create this art piece because I wanted to bring attention towards the things that we often ignore and emphasize on the idea that clothes have no gender.

Medium: Oil Pastels
This piece is called Maria Bonita. It was made using Oil Pastels on a 5.5in x 8.5in canvas. My intention with this piece was to show how iconic she is as a film actress since she went against most female actress archetypes. She was bold and stood out from the rest of the actresses of the Golden Era of the Mexican Cinema. She is known worldwide for her roles in movies such as Enamorada, and Doña Barbara.

"Pink Flower" is a acrylic paint with the colors black, pink, white, and grey. This painting is inspired by what I like to paint most of the times which are flowers. It also represents nature . This painting has a lot of pink and I wanted the bright colors to pop. I used different shades of pink, I used 4 shades of different pinks bright pink with red and i added white to the other pinks to make them lighter. For the bottom of the flower I wanted to look like it was inwards. The top of the flower was a bit more longer.

This art piece is called "Lady Maria". Some mediums I used for this art piece were color pencils, markers, and pens. I was inspired to do this art piece in representation to my culture and to also be able to interact more within my culture by researching certain things. To demonstrate my involvement within my culture I decided to redesign one of my cultural clothes worn by many women from my culture. For the design of the remake of 'La China Poblana' which is known as, I designed the dress to be a yellow color with some red. I also design the sides of the arms of the dress to have the Mexican flag and added some sort of flowers on the dress to add a little more design to it.

"Portrait of a Person Turning" is a self-portrait focusing on the thematic implication of movement and nature. The graphite portrait considers the romanticists ideal that it is not meant to be a record or a photo, but instead, allowing the viewers to see beyond the apparent. I incorporated the hollyhock flower and its ambitious endeavor to bloom on impoverished land. Over my heart, the hollyhock crosses into the branch of thorns that curve in a cautious (defensive) manner framing my face.

"Hey There Lonely Girl' was truly inspired by the Chicano ( people of Mexican descent born in the United States) culture. Clowns have always represented comedy and tragedy in the Mexican-American culture so i've created a representation of a girl living the mi vida loca (my crazy life) lifestyle. She is not really associated with any gang but with the gang lifestyle itself. I added a touch of me by including some makeup details which just really represents her expressing the love she has for the culture she grew up in with her passion for makeup. The background was meant to be like a late 90's-early 2000's glamour photoshoot aesthetic since that was/is very popular in the Chicano culture. I only used charcoal to create this whole art piece. If I needed to blend a certain spot I would use a cotton swab to avoid using my fingers.

This art piece represents when someone enters a new chapter in their life. The graphite in the drawing is supposed to symbolize that part of a person’s life being done and in the past; the same way old pictures were. The flowers also symbolize the end of something like when someone dies and you give them flowers. The big and messy eyebrows are supposed to represent immaturity and naive. This drawing represents someone becoming a new person and leaving their old self behind.

Recently I have been going through an emotional rollercoaster with my academic and personal life, "Within and Without" helped me with releasing these emotions and reflect on them. I did the usual art technique where I layer the paint together to create the feathers. Something new I tried was using shading to depict the head of the rooster, which came out the way I wanted. The hands shown in the painting are the hands of a statue of the divine mercy that I have in my room. This is suppose to represent this inner emotion that no one sees accept the statue itself. I was trying to add religious symbolism.

This cartoon style piece was inspired by the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I wanted my piece to have some sort of humor in it.
