I use the Crucible along with documentation of "The Red Scare" and "Passage of the Patriot Act after 911" to teach that fiction can be based on reality, and a very important tool for social commentary by the author.

Poetry-
We use lyrical poetry studies, and will often use lyrics from songs for several reasons. As with fiction it can teach social commentary, but by reviewing the interplay of text with different music modalities, we can learn the actual musical rhythms of the poetry, and tonality. Even "Happy Birthday" can be a very very sad song when played and sung in a minor key.

Informational Text -
Today--even information has a spin on it.I love to use these for Google Slide and Animoto projects. We will take what is , at the time, a controversial subject ad read many professional editorials taking both sides of an issue. "Kaepernick--to Kneel or Not to Kneel", etc, and the student will eventually take their side f the issue and use what they have learned from the professionals, to put "Their Editorial Spin" on the issue.
