Online petitions are particularly easy to set up and enable access for members of the public to submit and sign petitions online, and to track their progress.

In an attempt to make laws that reflect the views of the majority of the community, members of parliament are more likely to consider a petition for law reform that has many signatures demonstrating strong support within the community.

The act of creating a petition and gathering signatures can generate public awareness of an issue and support for the desired legislative change.

Once a petition has been given to a member of parliament they must present the petition in parliament. Parliaments receive hundreds of petitions each year and there is no guarantee or compulsion for the suggested law reform to be adopted.

Many petitions do not gain public and media attention after being tabled.
