What I knew about painting before taking the module

All I knew about painting is all about the colors, lines, shapes, and strokes. I thought painting was a method that was used as early as the ancient period, which continues to be carried out till this day. I saw the purpose of painting similar to the purpose of a camera, which is to capture the beautiful. In my perspective painting is a method to freely express one’s ideas and to bring life in a form of art. I only know little about the history of painting before, however I was already familiar with the four famous artists who greatly contributed to the evolution of the fine arts. These are Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michaelangelo. Aside from that, I also knew some famous works created by different artists, examples of famous paintings are the Mona Lisa, Starry Night, The Scream, and American Gothic. In addition, I knew painting was not just about precision and quality, but it is also about innovation and creativity.

Image © Wikidata.org

What I learned in the module about the form of painting as a Fine Art

One of the main things that I learned in this module is that the artists of the fine arts used their creativity to innovate new ideas, and at the same time get inspiration from traditional ones. I also realized the importance of space in painting as a fine art, because it makes the picture look more realistic and gives out an illusion. In our previous lessons, I have acquired knowledge about paintings during the Renaissance period, and it led me to recognize that most of their inspiration comes from religion. I got this idea when I noticed that the artists during that period usually paints religious subjects like Mary and baby Jesus, or even other biblical characters. I also noticed the idea of different philosophies that each artist wants to share; an example is Raphael’s School of Athens, wherein he placed Aristotle and Plato in his painting. In addition, the artists during the Renaissance were also able to convey the nature of humans in their paintings. In this period, there was a “marriage between science and art”, which led me to grasp the idea that painting is not all about creativity, but it is also bringing a formula towards it in order to create a painting that is beautiful. But the most important takeaway I learned from this module was being able to appreciate painting as a fine art by just simply looking at the form, connecting each part, and understanding the beauty as a whole.

Image © ReidsItaly.com

I want to learn more about the background of the famous artists like Michaelangelo and Raphael, because I am curious on what made them this gifted and motivated to create such works of art. I’m also curious on why they choose to bring back the traditional Greek and Roman styles in their paintings. I also wish to go to an art museum in the Philippines to see how beauty is presented and interpreted based in Philippine culture. I want to study the paintings by Filipino artists like Juan Luna’s Spoliarium, and be able to apply the lessons I have learned about the form of art. In addition, I want to know how artists of the fine arts practice their craft and where they get their inspiration.

Image © ABS-CBN News
