Riff invites Tony to the dance

Tony, fresh out of jail. Gets invited to a dance the two gangs are holding. Riff wants him there so he can intimidate them. They plan to schedule a rumble. Tony tells him he isn’t going to go, but with riff’s persistent asking, Tony shows up anyways.

Tony dies.

Tony runs to see Maria. Tony tells Maria what happened. Maria becomes angry but forgives Tony because she loves him. Tony leaves and goes into hiding. Maria plans to go see him but the police come. Maria sends Anita instead to pass along the message. Anita is attacked and assaulted by the Jets. Anita tells them to tell Tony that Maria was killed by Chino for loving Tony and forgiving him. Anita leaves, enraged. Tony hears the news and seeks out Chino. Tony finds Chino and asks him to kill him as well. Chino kills Tony as Maria arrives.

Tony meets Maria at the party. It’s love at first sight. The two share a dance in secret. They fall deeply in love. Bernardo finds out and forbids Maria from seeing him. The two see each other in secret and plan to run away. Maria wants Tony to stop the rumble. Tony promises he will and goes to stop it.

Tony tries to stop riff from going to the rumble. Riff has a gun. Tony tries to take the gun. They have a dance/fight for the gun. Riff wins and leaves with the gun. Refusing to end the rumble. Tony shows up at the Rumble, he try’s his best to stop it. Bernardo mocks him and pressures him to fight. Tony try’s to hold back, but he can’t hold back his anger and fights Bernardo. Riff gets involved. Bernardo pulls out a knife and kills riff. Then Tony kills Bernardo. The police arrive and everyone flees.

Peace between gangs

Maria Threatens to kill the sharks and herself, she scolds them all for fighting and for how far it’s gone. She yells at the sharks and jets. They all carry Tony’s body away. Doc takes Chino to the police station. The gangs saw what fighting each other would do to the people they care for. There’s finally peace between the two groups of people.

At the start of the movie. Tony was trying to better his life and leave his criminal days behind. Throughout the story he gets dragged back into the drama of the gangs because he meets Maria. In the end Tony dies due to the violence between the gangs. His death brings them together and stops the violence.
