For example, the Maginot Line was a line of concrete fortifications built by France to deter a German invasion through the eastern border. Similarly, Japan’s use of Pacific islands as military bases showcased how they adapted remote environments for defense. Also the extensive bombing campaigns of World War II had affected the environment, such as the London Blitz and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, caused significant environmental damage. Forests were destroyed, cities were reduced to rubble, and ecosystems were severely affected by the destruction.

World War II led to increased industrialization, particularly in the U.S. and the Soviet Union, where natural landscapes were transformed to produce war materials.
