The Warsaw Pact Was a defence treaty established by the Soviet Union along with 7 other USSR satellite states located within Eastern Europe. 
The Warsaw Pact was considered the 'Eastern Bloc' and NATO was the 'Western Bloc' of alliances in Europe. 
The Warsaw Pact saw the division of powers between Western and Eastern Germany where Western Germany would submit powers to Nato, while communist Eastern Germany would become a part of the communist Warsaw Pact. 
The Warsaw pact and NATO were considered the idea of opposition to global powers from the democratic west, compared to the communist spread in Eastern Europe led by the USSR. 
The Warsaw Pact and the Cold War were very closely tied and saw both events last for roughly the same amount of time. NATO, a political-military organization focused on the freedoms and defence of current members, embodies the ideas of democratic views that correlate with the views of Canada and beliefs of democratic principles and individual liberty. 
Canada, a key part of the transatlantic - alliance that still continues to this day and is a key aspect of the Canadian government's defence and the security of the country that continues to keep Canadians safe, free, and war-free. 
Canada's military is one of the most active and peace-leading countries that are included in NATO, as Canada's military has proudly, and loyally been a part of nearly every NATO operation since the signing of the treaty in 1949.

The attacks would take the lives of over 3,000 people and affect families, friends, and Americans as the attacks proved that the safety and security of the USA were not up to standards whatsoever. 
The aftermath of the September 11th attacks and NATO involvement of Article 5, would happen less than 24 hours after the attacks in New York that would invoke The United States and NATO members in self-defence tactic operations.
 On October 4th, 2001, The USA and NATO would endure their first anti-terrorist operation as this would be considered the first time Article 5 would be induced into world events.
The second anti-terrorist operation led by NATO would begin just two weeks after the first as American and NATO members would guard the Eastern Mediterranean looking for any illegal, or terrorist activity that they could try to stop or peacefully handle to the best of their ability. 

" The eight measures to support the United States, as agreed by NATO were:

• to enhance intelligence-sharing and cooperation, both bilaterally and in appropriate NATO bodies, relating to the threats posed by terrorism and the actions to be taken against it;
• to provide, individually or collectively, as appropriate and according to their capabilities, assistance to Allies and other countries which are or may be subject to increased terrorist threats as a result of their support for the campaign against terrorism;
• to take necessary measures to provide increased security for facilities of the United States and other Allies on their territory;
• to backfill selected Allied assets in NATO’s area of responsibility that are required to directly support operations against terrorism;
• to provide blanket overflight clearances for the United States and other Allies’ aircraft, in accordance with the necessary air traffic arrangements and national procedures, for military flights related to operations against terrorism;
• to provide access for the United States and other Allies to ports and airfields on the territory of NATO member countries for operations against terrorism, including for refuelling, in accordance with national procedures;
• that the Alliance is ready to deploy elements of its Standing Naval Forces to the Eastern Mediterranean in order to provide a NATO presence and demonstrate resolve;
• that the Alliance is similarly ready to deploy elements of its NATO Airborne Early Warning Force to support operations against terrorism. "

For nearly 20 years NATO allied forces have been deployed in Afghanistan in peacekeeping, and anti-terrorist threat attempts. 
After the September attacks, NATO forces would invade Afghanistan and secure peace - which has led to no attacks on NATO countries from Afghanistan in 22 years. 
NATO along with a heavy United States presence in Afghanistan was withdrawn from the Middle East due to the collapse of the Afghan government which lead to the Taliban taking control of the country. A deal was signed between the Taliban and the United States to withdraw troops from the country, as NATO would soon follow the same orders as the Taliban poses too much of a direct threat to NATO soldiers, along with the direct opposition of the Taliban's views, and beliefs on women, children, and laws that not be comprehended or accepted in a democratic view which NATO aligns with.

The War has been over territory near the Ukraine-Russian border that has been ongoing since the War in Donbas - particularly the Russian annexed Crimea, Dontesk, and Luhansk. Ukraine did not want War but needed to protect their land and country as unmarked Russian troops would continue to migrate to Ukraine - Russian occupied territory and in 2015 after pro-Russian Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was overthrown the two countries tried to command peace - yet by 2019 7% of Ukraine was considered by the government to be 'Russian occupied". 
By early February 2021, Russia had established a large military to effectively set up around the Ukraine border along with allied country Belarus - 21 days later, Russia would officially declare the Dontesk and Luhansk People's Republics as official independent states. 
Ukraine has been in talks about joining NATO for decades yet has not been able to over the conflict with Russia. President Putin of Russia condemns the expansion of NATO and demanded that Ukraine never join the alliance. 
NATO only provides collective defence countries that are allied with the alliance, and Ukraine unfortunately is not which is why no country has come to help fight with Ukraine on Russian or Ukraine soil. 
Poland however, is one of the members of NATO that borders Ukraine and Belarus. This is the only way that NATO will defend Ukraine - if the war gets pushed too far west, or Russian or Belarusian troops enter Poland territory.
This is the ultimate way and most seen circumstance by which World War III could possibly be sparked.

Mikhail Gorbachev, who was the last leader of the Soviet Union was a communist-focused leader with a Marxism–Leninism political and moral view. Gorbachev would shift his views to a more socially democratic sense by the early 1990s when Gorbachev would introduce the first Soviet multi-party election system which was the beginning of Russia's democratization that would lead to the fall of Russia's communist government system and the ultimate fall of the Soviet Union. By the 1990s Gorbachev would have opposition as Boris Yeltsin - who would advocate for economic reforms and democracy within the Soviet Union, as in early December of 1991, Yeltsin would meet with delegates and officials from Ukraine and Belarus to officially declare the dissolution of the Soviet Union and become the first official President of the new Russian state.

NATO works closely with the EU, and the UN to continue allied relations with Non-NATO countries to maintain peace and security in case of war and to prevent it. There are 193 nations a part of the UN (Minus Palestine and The Vatican) which is used to prevent war and prolong peace within the world. 
in 2022, NATO currently has 9 "global partners" across the globe with which NATO unofficially aligns itself with to communicate and cooperate on a regular basis. 
These 9 countries are: Afghanistan, Australia, Colombia, Iraq, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand and Pakistan. These countries are in communication with NATO and have developed relations that help these countries' security, safety, well-being, and state - However, NATO cannot and will not come to the defence of any of these countries in acts of violence, war, or crime that does not directly affiliate with a NATO-allied country. 
The United States also have an allied system in which Canada often follows called MNNA - Major Non-NATO Ally.
These 19 countries are offered a relationship, and solidarity from the country but do not offer any security detail towards any of these countries. 
in 1949 when NATO became an official alliance - Article 10 states that membership to NATO entails a “European state in a position to further the principles of this Treaty and to contribute to the security of the North Atlantic area”.

Since 1992 with their first operation in Bosnia, NATO has conducted many operations that hold strong value towards NATO's beliefs by using force and help to assure and protect freedom and rights all humans should have. 
The operation that lasted from 1992-2004 in Bosnia was an intervention by NATO after the Army of Republika Srpska - a military-political group that posed a direct threat to the Bosnian people and the UN. The operation would last 12 years and would eventually bring peace to a country in need. 
Kosovo, another small European country also needed intervention from NATO against Serbian forces who were trying to invade and capture territories from Kosovo. 
In 1999, NATO would laugh its second operation on Serbian-occupied territory located inside Kosovo, as NATO would bomb the areas for three months before the Kumanovo Treaty was signed ending the Kosovo-Serbian war - and NATO operations in Kosovo.
