Flannery O’Connor has written, “I am interested in making a good case for distortion because I am coming to believe that it is the only way to make people see.” Kafka makes a good case for distortion when he distorts Gregor’s body and sense of time to form a metaphor relating his emotional and internal turmoil with the transition of his body into a giant beetle. Flannery Connor wrote “I am interested in making a good case for distortion because I am coming to believe that it is the only way to make people see.” This is exactly what Kafka was trying to accomplish in his work Metamorphosis. Kafka changed details from the text to have symbolic meanings of Gregor’s inner most emotion. This helps the reader see what Kafka was really feeling in his character Gregor. Kafka wants the audience to see that in life the only way to represent the hideous and evil in something or someone is to make it look ugly to the world.

In the story, time is always working against Gregor. When it matters the most that Gregor moves fast, time goes by agonizingly slow and when he needs it to move slowly it only goes quicker. A great example of time moving by in way that is unrealistically fast is at the beginning of the story when Gregor has to get ready for work as a beetle. The clock keeps moving faster as he gets later and later to work. Then, when his father is yelling at him and hitting him, “he began to turn around as quickly as he could, which was in reality very slow” (pg. 310). Kafka furthers this effect by writing     extensively and in detail during the most agonizing parts of the story. Almost two pages is dedicated to the description of Gregor trying to turn around to go back into his room on pg. 310. By stretching time and using physical symbols, he makes the reader not only understand his concept but actually feel the way Gregor is. Even though this story was written in a time we cannot now relate to, these same feelings are very present in some people now. People are able to relate to this story in a deeper way because of the stretching of reality that Kafka creates. Kafka shows that maybe our emotions and minds are so separate from reality that the only way to let them be heard is the opposite from anything real.
