History and Background of Hermes

Hermes was a Greek God from the Twelve Olympians living on Mount Olympus. He was the son of Zeus, known as the ruler and protector of all Gods on Mount Olympus. Hermes' mother was named Maia who is the goddess of nursing mothers. When Hermes' was an infant, Apollo accused him of stealing his cattle. Hermes' claimed that he never stole anything because he was just an infant, but Zeus knew he did. He said that for Apollo to have his cattle back, he would have to get his instrument back in return. Hermes' was a God that was full of tricks and stealing, so he was later named the messenger God. "Decreed that Hermes would become the messenger of the gods. Hermes also became a trickster god and the god of thieves"

Hermes's Functions in the Odyssey

Hermes had many jobs in The Odyssey considering his father was Zeus. For example, he was the protector of all travelers, and doorways and roads. One of his most important roles was becoming the messenger of the gods and a conductor for the dead to Hades, another Greek god. Given all his roles, Hermes was favored by the Greeks, "Hermes was also a dream god, and the Greeks offered to him the last libation before sleep" (Brittanica).

A symbol that represents Hermes' is the winged sandals, representing the way that he traveled in between realms to send messages. The shoes allowed him to fly between the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. The wings on Hermes' shoes showed his speed. The theme that Hermes represents is that not everyone can be trusted. Hermes was trusted with honesty and loyalty and Zeus made him the messenger of God. He was sent as the messenger to be able to keep the secrets that were sent throughout the realms.
