This quote in itself is an example of how highly Tom is thought of and how he is very respected by the people that know of him. 
   Red, white, and gold are the colors mentioned frequently when describing the Buchanan’s house, which gives a rich and patriotic feel. The white and red feel happy and patriotic, and the white also gives a feel of elegance because you have to have a very clean and neat house for white curtains and furniture. The gold gives and obvious feel of wealth, which is fitting considering how wealthy the Buchanan’s are. 
   As Tom is showing the house, he says “I’ve got a nice place here”. I took this as a sort of subtle brag, downplaying the grandness of the Buchanan’s mansion.
