In Poland the communists were voted out in a peaceful way. In Yugoslavia the communists were rebelled against. In Russia there was a government leader who tried to "reform" the economy and government. This made a lot of people angry, so eventually the leader, and his government were arrested by a secret police society compiled by the citizens

Mikhail Gorbachev started this idea by executing the two policies of glasnost and  perestroika to give the people more freedom and to restructure the economy. But the sudden change was bad for the USSR's infrastructure . In some places, like Poland, the communists were voted peacefully out of power. But in some places, like Yugoslavia, there were sudden and violent uprisings that hurt Yugoslavia more than it helped it. It also hurt the economy, even with Mikhail Gorbachev's brief attempt to reform the economy, people were not used to the capitalist economy that democracy provided.  Although some countries, like the Czech Republic, made a rapid and successful change to capitalism, but some countries could not do so.  In addition, the sudden influx of religious freedom sparked violent uprisings throughout Eastern Europe.  Take Yugoslavia for example.  when the communist ruler of Yugoslavia was overthrown, people fell into chaos, 
such as the Yugoslavian people saying that the Albanians have committed unspeakable atrocities.  In short, a change to democracy would help the USSR, but the sudden way it was implemented hurt some of Eastern Europe in the sudden influx of economic and social freedom among the former USSR countries.
