My civic action will be volunteering at Planned Parenthood for my senior service project. I will be escorting patients through the crowd of protestors. Due to current events, I know this will a very impactful, gratifying, and intense experience. I am looking forward to meeting the patients who seek care at Planned Parenthood to truly understand the organization’s importance. My civic action will be reaching out to RecycleNow, and getting people to reach out to them as well. RecycleNow is a campaign under the Recycling Alliance of Philadelphia that works to promote expanded recycling in the city of Philadelphia in order to improve the environment, economy, and quality of life in Philadelphia. This group advocates for public policy and direct action to result in efficient recycling by more people, waste reduction, and move toward zero waste (Recycle Now). The problem is that the last recorded event from RecycleNow was in 2015. My solution to the problems of wrong-bin recycling and miseducation is to revive this campaign and reach out about setting up new events in the Philadelphia area to educate people about not only what can be recycled, but the problems that come with recycling in the wrong bins. My hope is that through this campaign, the Philadelphia community will see an uptick in recycling and fewer recyclable materials that end up in landfills. My goal is to push the message that not only will this knowledge help the environment, but it will also help the economy and quality of life for people in Philadelphia. Teen marijuana use is a serious problem that the US is facing and with the recent passing of a bill by the house, marijuana could become legal in every state. This would make it widely easier for teens to gain access to marijuana and ultimately increase the number of teen smokers. For my civic action I would like to establish a newsletter for members of the community that will allow for me and others to inform the public on the harm that the passing of this law can lead to. It is important to maintain a transparent and effective communication between the patients and the healthcare providers, especially in the case of cancer in which the costs are excessively high in the US. My civic action will be to educate Shipley students on taking the Septa train to and from school. The train is a faster, cheaper, and less polluting way to travel. The Bryn Mawr train station is only a 3-4 minute walk from Shipley and can take you all the way to Malvern or into Philadelphia. Taking the train a few times a week will decrease pollution drastically and lead to cleaner and healthier air.

My civic action is getting middle schoolers comfortable and aware of the topic Anorexia Nervosa. Anorexia Nervosa is easier cured at the start of the disorder. Sometimes adolescents might not even know they are suffering of an eating disorder, so informing the younger grades can help stop this. I included the first warning signs of Anorexia, and gave important information on the disorder. For my civic action, I wanted to educate my audience but also give them the ability to get engaged. Firstly, I want to educate people on the issue at hand and explain to them why it's a problem and what we can all do to solve it. Secondly, I wish for people to put my words to the test and see for themselves that it is easy to make the switch to cruelty-free cosmetics; so there are steps they can take to make that possible. As a consumer, people can look up which brands test and which ones don't. if they aren't sure they can look it up using an animal testing database. People can check their products for cruelty-free labels and dispose of and replace the ones that are not cruelty-free. For my civic action, I made a poster that is meant to educate kids on animal testing history and possible solutions. It would primarily be posted in middle and high schools. I feel as if most teenagers are unaware of the details of animal testing and so I wanted my civic action to be informative. I chose to target my civic action for this specific age group because the younger generations are the future. They can learn new things and then apply that knowledge when they are older and make visible changes. I also wanted it to be an interactive poster and so there is a QR code attached that leads to a petition people can sign to end animal testing. My name is Nate Panzer and I go to The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, PA. I am writing to you about the potential legalization of marijuana in Pennsylvania. It has been proven that Marijuana has been able to reduce anxiety, chronic pain, and even help treat insomnia. Although there is a stigma against it, marijuana has been proven to help many people. In addition to its medical health, marijuana has an immense economic health that will bring taxes and prosperity to the great state of Pennsylvania. States like Washington and Colorado have seen enormous economic benefits and have been able to legalize marijuana recreationally. I think Pennsylvania voters should be able to vote for themselves if they want it to be legalized recreationally. My project was specifically on oxycontin, so I do mention oxycontin, however the main goal with this poster is to educate on the stigma and how to help change it. There are so many people struggling with addiction that do not seek help because of this stigma and embarrassment. This is a major problem as there are solutions to help these people and just because of the way society judges this disease, people dealing with it do not seek help. My civic action will be to help set up the Havertown Village Project which is on May 20th. From 11 am-3 pm. Havertown Village Project is a non-profit organization founded by local mothers who share the goal of helping children who suffer from mental illnesses. There will be activities like yoga, meditation, and art therapy that provide a calming experience for the children. For my civic action, I decided to conduct two interviews about the pink tax-- one male and one female interviewee. I asked the same questions in both interviews, hoping to gage how both men and women view the pink tax/how they feel it affects them. Based on the information I received from these interviews, I wrote a letter to Pennsylvania senator, John Fetterman. In my letter, I ask him to introduce a bill that would combat the Pink Tax through regulation of discriminatory pricing. It felt good to not only spread the word about the Pink Tax to my interviewees, but also advocate for myself in this email! I'm really excited for a response and hopefully some change in the future!

I plan on having my classmates complete this Kahoot so I can see their assumptions, and then teach the actual facts of AI. For my civic action, I wanted to reach out to local organizations to try to better understand the root causes of food insecurity and how to eliminate the stigma. For the first part, I created an infographic that displayed statistics of how many people face food insecurity in our area, since my main focus was Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Then, I listed the organizations I emailed and the questions I asked. Additionally, since I have been involved in the Service Committee at Shipley, I decided that was the audience I wanted to reach. I will be putting all of the documents together, from the infographic to the emails I sent, and emails I received, and once I share it with the Service Committee I will hand all of the documents to the new president of the committee. I hope that it gets passed down each year and that new documents and information can be added so they can see if any changes have been made from year to year.

For my civic action, I wanted to help the health of individuals who are unaware they are using damaging beauty products. The FDA does not have enough regulation over the safety of cosmetic products. I found that the most important part of my research was the cancerous chemicals in 28% of all cosmetic products. Not enough people research the products they use on their skin on a day-to-day basis. I created a poster to hang in the bathrooms in order to reach my target audience, which is mostly teenage and older women. I chose a striking headliner to catch people's attention, which reads “Your Cosmetics Are Causing Cancer." The solution I suggest to my audience is to use the EWG-verified website to learn about the ingredients in products before use.

For my civic action, my goal is to reach an audience of youth in my community in order to educate them about different soulutions and ideas about youth use of marijuana. In doing this, I decided to film a short podcast episode with my mom where I asked her different questions pertaining to my topic. We went more deeply into her opinions on youth use of marijuana and how she thinks peoples views/ regulations on it have changed from when her generation was growing up compared to mine. We also talked about my two options for solutions and based off her opinions she chose which one she thought would be more effective. We then took her opinions and compared them to mine to see the difference in thoughts on youth use of marijuana between the different times and societies we were growing up in. I hope that after posting this converstation on youtube, and sending it out in an email to the youth of my community, Shipley, young adults are able to learn from this and understand that as times are evolving so are regulations and rules on the drug and that they need to stay educated on them while also advocating for safety and health among their peers.

My independent project focused on researching genetically modified foods and their effects on the process of producing and selling organic products. For my civic action, I chose to send an email to a company that strives to make healthy foods more accessible on the go: Farmer's Fridge. On their website, Farmer's Fridge has an interesting description relating to their use of GMOs in response to a FAQ, so I decided to question their statement and make this the focus of my email. In the email, I acknowledged the companies mission and values, asking if these had any effect in their decision of whether to use organic food or GMOs. Even though I am still waiting for a response, opening a line of communication with this company about their use of GMO food versus organic food should be educational and provide me with valuable insight into the company's decision making pertaining to which food products to use.

In my email I express the burdens and health effects of contaminated water. For my independent project, I chose designer babies. Designer babies are often genetically modified to make the child more intelligent, prettier, or athletic. Though this is not legal to put into practice, it could be in the future, and the prices of these treatments could push the upper and lower classes even farther apart. I looked into the differences between American and Chinese laws. For my civic action, I made a painting of a baby crawling between a room depicting success and a dark area. In the light area is a syringe and a barcode on the baby, showing the fake and generic sense of a baby created in the lab. The dark area, being simplistic, is supposed to show simpler, less complicated times. The actual baby not having facial features is also considered to show the lack of individuality that could come from genetically modifying the babies.

For my civic action, I made a TikTok featuring Shipley Students talking about what they wear. Taking the popular "fit check" trend, but with the twist that they say the brand of each article, and I mark if what they are wearing is sustainable or not. Bringing awareness to this issue and posting it to my friends shows people that what they are wearing is actually hurting the environment. While I post this on TikTok, it draws people's attention because it is a popular trend but with additional information. This gives Shipley Students and other students ideas of brands that they should and should not be buying from. The issue with buying unsustainable clothes is that people usually don't recognize or know the brands, so I shed light on this subject. By taking action to raise awareness, I am spreading the word about which brands to NOT buy from. In the caption for my tiktok, I gave a brief description of what the video was about, how unsustainability in these brands harms the world, and fast and slow fashion.

For my civic action, I wanted to design a poster to hang around hospitals, and other medical places, in order to help fix health misinformation. Having two parents that are doctors, I have heard a lot about those who try to "doctor shop" in order to get the type of treatment they believe they need due to excessive searching online.

I created an instagram account, in addition to poster, where people could reach out about whether the drugs they are taking are safe for their conditions. I have partnered with several doctors in the area to hang these flyers in their office, and who are willing to discuss this option with patients. Patients will have the ability to DM the Public Instagram, and I will post about this drug, and include common misconceptions, less known side effects, and include any research links that pertain to this drug. One interesting aspect is that I have added, is the ability to reach out to doctors, to have a 1 on 1 chat to with any of their concerns. My goal is to bridge the gap on Health Misinformation in all types of communities.

The way I designed the visual, is by answering common questions about AI, assuming no knowledge to start with. For my science and citizenship project, I chose to focus on environmental sustainability in everyday businesses. I noticed that some Starbucks locations are making more visible efforts to reduce waste, like promoting reusable cups, while others, especially the ones near me, haven’t made those changes as clearly. I wanted to understand why there’s a difference between locations, so I emailed my local Starbucks to ask about their current sustainability policies and whether they have any plans to become more eco-friendly. This helps me learn how businesses make decisions about sustainability and what role citizens can play by asking questions and raising awareness.

For my independent project paper I researched water pollution and how it effects humans and the environment. For my civic action, I wrote post cards to Aqua the private water company that provides water to 32 counties in Pennsylvania, including Montgomery County where I live. In my postcard I address the question of what the companies relationship is with the local and state governments they work with. Since regulation for water supplies and pollution can be addressed through these governments I am wondering how Aqua works with these governments in order to provide the safest and cleanest water to the clients they are supplying. For my civic action, I created an educational infographic to raise awareness about green infrastructure as a solution to urban water pollution. The infographic highlights the benefits of systems like rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavers, which help protect our waterways and promote sustainable communities. I chose to hang them up around the school to start small, in hopes that it will become something bigger. In addition, I attached a QR code at the bottom that leads to a document that has links to read more about green infrastructure and links to get involved.

For my civic action, I wrote letters to both NBC 10 Philadelphia and 6 ABC Action News, as they have the highest concentration of viewership locally, about the possibility of limiting weight loss drug advertisements on their news channels. I have reached out about this as a large reason for there being vast weight loss drug shortages, which is a result of people using these drugs who do not need them, which is in large part due to an over-advertisement of these drugs. This problem is so important as these shortages take these drugs away from people who need them, like those with obesity and diabetes.

For my Civic Action, I sent an email to the Pennsylvania Game Commission who manages and protects wildlife and habitats. In my email I addressed the issue and its importance. Then, I asked what they are doing to help and any possible solutions they have in mind to help the issue. I believe that they have the power to take action and help wildlife and endangered species to further improve captive breeding programs.

For my Civic Action, I sent a email to USADA, United States Anti-Doping Agency. The main goal of this email was to get answers to some of my questions and to hopefully provide a better solution for the problem of PED use in sports. I figured that if I reached out to them I could provide some new solutions and a new point of view. I hope that USADA will start, providing stronger testing and more consistent testing.

Overview:

Animal testing is the abuse, neglect, harm, or harsh treatment of an animal (depriving an animal of food, water, no veterinarian care, and good living conditions).

Animal testing is to test the efficiency and safety of products to get the green light from the FDA (diseases, chemicals, pharmaceuticals)

Civic action:

My solution is to prevent the normalization of animal testing and with that, an effective civic action is bans; boycotting products and including legislatures.

Bans have been successful in the past. Twelve states have enacted bans. Many animal rights activists and organizations encourage the global ban of animal testing. Society leaned toward banning all types of testing, according to a 2019 survey and a 2020 survey. In the 2019 survey, 79% of respondents supported legislation to prohibit animal experimentation. In the 2020 survey, 57% of respondents refused to purchase from brands that tested on animals.

My only concern with this civic action is how much advocacy I can do. Considering that I am not involved in any senate or government things, I do not know if my voice would really be heard. I wanted to create flyers to post around Philadelphia but I thought: How many people would glance over them? How many people would actually stop, consume the information, and take a photo of it? Would someone rip these flyers down to tape up or staple new flyers? What if someone puts another flyer or poster over it? Would the flyers fall off or fly away due to the weather? I do not want to waste paper or pollute the earth.

So…What I did was text my sister who works at City Hall. I am grateful, thankful, and appreciative that UPenn and Fox Chase Center are proactive on researching and discussing animal cruelty. I texted my sister, who works at City Hall alongside Mayor Cherelle Parker, if Philadelphia and the areas surrounding do anything regarding animal testing and avoiding it. I also texted her if the mayor or any important people at City Hall would be willing to learn more about the situation at hand and capitalize on it. I felt like this would be the best choice, option, and approach because I have close ties since my sister works there and it seems realistic. I remember too that someone during the consultancy protocols said to start local which I really liked and agreed with.

I hosted a social media detox to raise awareness about mental health and offer a fun solution to the problem of overconsumption of social media. I tried to target teenagers, who were my primary audience, so I targeted them directly. This could provide information and raise awareness about how it affects mental health in an easy time-efficient but fun way.

For my Civic Action, I sent an email and a postcard to the United States Department of Energy. My goal of reaching out was to let them know many people still worry about nuclear energy safety and it is still a big concern, especially to those who live near nuclear energy sites. I hope they will take my message into consideration and provide more steps for ensuring safety.

For my civic action project I posted posters around my neighborhood to help raise awareness for funds that are available to underserved women in need of abortions, I also posted a QR code that allowed people to donate to these said funds and find out more about where to access these funds.
