Reverend Parris was not concerned with Betty's health, but rather his own outside appearance. His reputation and how the town perceived him was more of a concern than his daughter's own health. He also understands that Betty and Abigail were caught up in doing actions that were sinful to the time. His concern stems from others finding out and sharing. He has worked hard for the congregation to respect him, and this incident would go against his intentions.

Reverend wants to fix what happened to Betty to keep his position as a pastor. Whenever Putnam suggests that he shares what has happened to Betty, Reverend disagrees. He talks about how the situation will make him look but does not show much care to Betty's actual health.

He is not concerned for his child's safety rather he is concerned about the bad image on his house hold itself. I believe that the Reverend's motives are to make sure no one suspects his house is plagued by demonic spirits or witchcraft.

9/10. I think it is very easy for people to be a part of the "mob mentality". People are always following trends to fit in and be a part of the latest trends. Whether it is clothes, items, or ideas people are very quick to jump on what everyone else is doing.

Abigail is very brave for constantly being dishonest about what happened with Betty. Yes, she eventually ended up telling the truth but that was after she realized how much she needed to tell the truth because of the consequences and problems it could lead to in the future.

Abigail is passionate in whatever she attends to. She may do something wrong (as implied by the throwing out of her employment) but she stands her ground in terms of her story. I think, looking at the stage directions and her emotions, it is implied that she may not be as innocent. She is also the leader of the girls. It shows very much the mentality that she leads the girls in actions and the story they will tell others.

Definitely a 10/10. There are some points where you or others can resist or not do the things that others are doing, but peer pressuring people is a big deal now. You see people that are good people hanging out with the wrong people or doing the wrong things not because they want to, but because of how easily influenced people are these days.

10/10. I think it is very easy to get caught up in the mob mentality. People like being comfortable and "apart of the crowd." In these days, anything that seems out of the norm, implies something is wrong with you. People like to fit in, and the mob would certainly do that. Think of times when sports teams became popular. People would jump on the bandwagon and only support this team when they were good.

He acted sincerely in the first few lines of the transcript. Like Mrs. Swain said, he was more concerned about how he looked for others rather than for Betty. He did not want people to perceive him as associated with witchcraft and spirits.

John Proctor is an intriguing character. He is much more in-tune with his own flaws than most of the other people in Salem. It seems that everyone else is most concerned with accusing or pointing out their neighbor's flaws, but Proctor is set up as a person who does a lot of self-examining. The fact that he sees himself as a "sinner" does imply that he has definitely done something wrong and feels guilty about it. The rest of the town also sins, but they do not seem to worry about it.

In the description, he walked with a lot of authority. When people who were acting foolish would go near him, he had a powerful way of convicting them of their wrongdoings. I would give society as a whole an 8/10. So many people today follow along with whatever the majority of folks believe. It is almost as if folks are afraid to think independently. We have become a nation of people who see those who think differently (especially with politics) as the enemy. I have noticed that people refer to others as "stupid" or "dumb" just because they don't agree with their way of thinking. We used to be more sensitive to the feelings of others.

8/10. The reason it is so easy to follow the "mob mentality" is because everyone else is doing it. Many people do things to please themselves and others rather than pleasing God. It is in our sinful nature to want to go with the flow of what others are doing. This is why it is so important to have a relationship with God. When I haven't walked uprightly with God, I have fell into this mentality. It was so easy because my focus was not on getting my attention from God but rather than others. I think it is all a part of where you put your faith. If it is in God, this temptation is much easier to handle.

It seems that Reverend Parris is very concerned about the way that others view him. He is more concerned about his reputation than he is about the health of Betty. He wants to continue to be the minister and is afraid that he will be suspected of witchcraft.
