The rich couldn't fight the poor because they were outnumbered by the poor. For example the poor needed to take out loans to by tiny plots of land that would never be able to give them enough money to pay back their debts. Also since they were so pounded in the ground from money trouble they had no say in their government because only the rich had a say in government. Taxes affected the Americas because after a war the british started the stamp act which implied that they needed to pay taxes on everything. They thought this was unfair and wanted to do something about it. But Britain struck, They made whatever they were doing legal and that made their people mad. The soon to be Americans started a revolution. When the poor had to pay taxes they had to borrow money from people. And when they couldn't pay them back they would have to sell family members as slaves.
So a civil war broke out against the rich and poor. The american colonies were kind of similar to the Athens. They had won a war. King Henry III had paid off an expensive war. Yet he was still glad they won. But the other people were not, because there was not a lot of money for food and such. So King Henry III passed off the stamp act. The stamp act is when you mail a letter or send cards to people you must put a stamp on it. The stamp cost tax, which is money. Many people did not like this way even tough this was the only way to put money back into the town. Many people burnt the stamps and acted rebellious against the king. So if you look in both situations don't you think democracy could have been used.
