This took place in 1274 and 1281. The Mongols had conquered most of Asia and they tried to conquer Japan. They were stopped by a whirlwind in the process. It stopped so many ships from coming to Japan and they weren't able to attack. This happened once again and the same thing happened. The Japanese thought they were superior because of this. The only thing which happened is the Samurai got angry that they didn't get to fight and turned their anger on the peasants by killing them. So clearly this was a time of destruction and trouble, but it was also good in a way.

After the rule of Nobunaga in Japan, his successor Toyotomi Hideyoshi became ruler. This man was the 2nd greatest unifier of Japan. Hideyoshi was confident that he could expand his empire through conquering. He tried to conquer Korea in 1592. He thought his military could easily conquer it. They fought and had a brief truce in 1596. This was broken because they attacked again in 1597. This ended in a stalemate because no sides won. It ended with Hideyoshi's death in Korea.

An emperor named Tokugawa Ieyasu ruled Japan from 1603. This man established a shogunate that would last for a long time. There was a long Civil War before his rule. He created a new government. He unified Japan, but he ruled strictly. He would not let anyone go out or come in.
