Billie Eilish vs Lil Nas X and Intersectionality

For a bit of context, Billie Eilish's music video for "all the good girls go to hell" contains hellish imagery just like Lil Nas X's "MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)." While Eilish's music video does not contain as much imagery, its lyrics are much more obvious in their references to hell while Lil Nas X's lyrics don't reference hell at all. Both videos received backlash from religious groups, but the amount of hate comments that Lil Nas X received was incomparable. Being a Black man who is very publicly out as gay, Lil Nas X was not held to the same standards as Billie Eilish. As a White woman who has decided to keep her sexuality to herself, Billie Eilish was cut a bit more slack in her situation. The different aspects of Lil Nas X's identity and how they intersect are what led him to be scrutinized in a way that Eilish was not. Because of the various facets, his identity is not seen nor is as easily accepted as Eilish's is.

Discussion Questions

Flowers and Androcentrism

Khalid Attaf, the owner of this video, works in a convenience store in Chicago. He makes videos where he pranks his customers, posting them on YouTube and on TikTok. In his latest video, he attempts to hand out flowers to his customers, and his male customers react dramatically considering that they are only being handed a flower. When I first saw this video on TikTok a few days ago, I immediately thought of this assignment, and more importantly, androcentrism. The men in this video are so adamant about the meaning behind flowers that they react aggressively––most likely to counteract the fact that another man has just offered them flowers. After watching this video for the first time, I found it equally shocking and funny, but the more I thought about it, the sadder it became. Society has reached a point where men (in certain locations, or neighborhoods) are made to feel like they cannot even accept a flower. There is so much pushback on anything that seems remotely feminine. Because they react so drastically over a simple flower, which is obviously not physically part of them, I cannot even begin to imagine what it is like for these men to experience "softer" emotions––they most likely don't, or try not to. This is incredibly damaging when they become (or already are) fathers, boyfriends, brothers, sons, etc.

Institutionalized Sports

Recently, Greg Abbott (Texas Gov.) signed a bill that bans transgender students from joining and participating in school sports. In general, sports are greatly institutionalized––especially on the basis of gender. As our textbook mentions, sports are intentionally kept sex-segregated in order to keep the balance that society desires. Integrating sports could potentially run the risk of having men "lose the presumption of male superiority" (Wade & Ferree, 208). Men do not want to lose to women because it could affect their egos; additionally, one cannot even begin to imagine how men would react if they lost to a trans athlete, considering that men often view those who are transgender as below women. It is also important to understand that this separation of genders within sports supports the idea of the binary, completely leaving out other identities that exist outside of the binary. This is something that we are already used to, so having this bill be signed only makes matters worse. The signing of this bill only serves to separate and "other" trans students, and more importantly, trans athletes. With this regression, there is the continuation of the stigma against trans people and the total exclusion of them.
