Throughout the story, there are bunches of missed opportunities. One of them being while Elie was in the concentration camp. There was almost a "grace period", because there was a kind leader of the camp. This was most likely the healthiest and happiest Elie was, but later, a new leader came and Elie had to work in construction and would get beat. Overall, people have to stay appreciative because they can never know what lies ahead.
