https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM_2ArOe9yQ

In this clip, we can see that the father can't "take a sick day" because he has to still be a dad to his young child. This role of being a father is causing this man to be unable to take a day for himself; however, this reflects the changing expectation of fathers to be just as involved as childcare as the mother in the modern era.

Recently I have been playing through the God of War games. When playing the games you can notice a progression throughout the games on how female characters are treated. GOW and GOW two both came out in the early 2000s. These games rely on Kratos treating women to a higher standerd as he seems that as lesser then the men in the story. The only girl character he looks up to or considers as more is Athena. In the modern God of War games god of war 2018 and god of war ragnarok (2022), you see a more modern look on male and female equality. Kratos had a wife who he treated as equal and he treats all other female characters as equals. His character in the original games represents a view on women of that time compared to the newer games where he as a character represents modern feminism

In this show, the opposed gender roles strongly affect the characters within the plot. When observing Jerry Seinfeld's life, one can notice that he has little problems arise. He has a stable, well paying job and no concern for how others think about him. Elaine, however, showcases a very harsh life and the difficulties of being a women in an unstable workforce, along with needing to show concern for other's opinions about her. Their lives differ due to their opposing genders and the higher position that men typically hold in the modern workforce.

Netflix's hit show You follows Joe Goldberg, a self-proclaimed "nice guy," and his girlfriend, Guinevere Beck. Behind the scenes, Joe is secretly a self-absorbed, obsessive narcissist. Throughout the series, Joe makes an old ex "disappear," kills a disapproving friend of his girlfriend, and frames his therapist. Joe's controlling and obsessive tendencies towards his girlfriend reflect outdated gender roles, in which a man is "greater than" a woman. In later seasons, Joe marries Love Quinn. Behind the guise of new parenthood, Joe and Love commit murders whilst also equally bearing the weight of having a newborn child. Joe's progression from obsessive boyfriend to dutiful (yet murderous) father reflects an overall societal shift in feminist ideology over time.

Mens products being cheaper than women's products is seen all of the time. This is because of the pink tax. There is not a huge reason for pink tax. These products can be found exact same, other than them being "pink" meaning girlified . An example of this, was an advertisement I saw this weekend on razors. This advertisement showed that women's razors are 25% more than men's. Every year women pay up to $1,351 more on the same products. This shows how something so small such as the color of a product, makes a difference when it comes to the buyers, being women or a man. Pink tax is seen everyday on advertisements for women's products, and for what, the color of the product?

The TV show Glee inspects the aspects of a diverse group of teenage students in their high school's glee club. In the show's Super Bowl special, "The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle," the newest football coach, Coach Beiste, mandated that the football team would perform a halftime number with the show choir at the championship game, to build a new team and stop the violence between cliques. One of the popular football players quits the team and convinces most of the other teammates to do the same, due to the fear of being called names for participating in "feminine" activities. This is a difficulty that many people face today of either being too masculine or feminine for what people deem normal. Although this was a problem, in the episode, after realizing that it does not matter what others think and that different activities are for all people, the football team members rejoin the team to be a part of the halftime performance with their new throng.

This is meant to appeal to the company's target audience: men. Having Jack relate to this audience makes people feel more related to the character; therefore, more prone to buy the food. The stereotypes also show how fathers were perceived during this time as very masculine and reduced down to only liking sports and food.

Merida is expected by her parents and her people to find a suitor and get married when she comes of age. However, this is the last thing Merida wishes to do with her life. Merida cherishes her freedom to do what she wishes whenever she wishes. She doesn't want to lose that by finding a husband. She wants to be her own person and not be told what she can and can't do. Merida makes a big mistake during the movie when she curses her mother and it's up to her to fix it before the curse becomes permanent. Merida figured out what she had to do on her own and defeated the evil that came with the curse. She not only defied her "planned out" life, but she also defied the stereotype that women can't do everything a man can do.

When he is first diagnosed he struggles with telling his family. He quits his part time job at a car wash by lashing out at his boss, I think this shows how the patriarchy has made men afraid of being venerable and has made emotions other than aggression or anger be seen as weak. Later in the show, he becomes increasingly withdrawn from his family, near the end of the show he even kills his brother in law. I think this goes to show how men have been conditioned to feel as they must be the breadwinners for their families. In straight relationships, this may cause women to have the most responsibility over raising the child(ren), resulting in a poor family dynamic.

The narrator is trying to say that the COVID lockdown is not a valid excuse for you to get enraged at people for the smallest things, and shows how men generally treat their children with high respect yet treat their wives terribly, when it should be the same as the child's level of respect.

Most video game producers like EA, Rockstar Games, Epic Games, etc. create games that target the male audience. These companies assume they will generate more money if they release games that are appealing to men rather than women. This is the main reason why 66.5% of characters in video games are male and only 27.7% are female. The statistics get even more significant when just video game's main character's genders are being compared. In video games the main character is a male 79.2% of the time. These facts show the gender typical stereotypes of the gaming world; however, this is changing as a female being the protagonist in a video game has increased by 18% in the past 5 years.

That 70's show is a hit comedy that has very interesting gender roles. Towards the end of the first season Red Foreman, the father of the main character Eric Foreman, has his hours cut back at the plant that he works at. He was the key bread winner for the family. Red's wife and Eric's mother, Kitty Foreman, for most of the show switches between a full and part time nurse. Throughout the show, we are shown the trials and tribulations of Eric growing up as a teenager in the 70's. Some episodes and story lines are influenced by the the money issues the Foreman's are troubled with. Eventually in later seasons, the plant closes and Red loses his job. He then bounces around to different jobs as Kitty picks up more and more hours at the hospital for them to stay afloat and live semi comfortably. This in turn shows the more power given to women throughout the 70's and how the work force today has become more and more balanced.

In the recent "Birds of Prey" movie Harley was seen with more resonable outfits, but before that, she could be seen in clothing designed to be more for men than women. Even her hair long and in pigtails in later designs contributes to this design for men and not women.

With St. Patrick's Day nearly upon us, the Altoona Mirror printed this matching game in its "Kids" section. When looking at this from a feminist criticism point of view, one notices that all leprechauns shown herein are male. On another page of the same paper a "Lucky Finds" gift card deal shows another leprechaun dancing atop a pot of gold. The gender of the leprechaun? You guessed it; male. Throughout media history there have been many ads and postings containing leprechauns, male leprechauns that is. It is seldom that one may find a female leprechaun in any form of media in the past century. There are also tales from Irish folklore claiming that female leprechauns do not exist. A feminist critic may ask, "why?" Why are there no females, and why are males only shown in media?

The fact that it took 94 years for a profession to include a single female seems unjust. Traditionally, males are viewed to enjoy professional sports over women and therefore may conclude women are not interested in such a profession or they are unable to perform such a task. Sarah Thomas was the first female referee in the NFL. Media responded in mixed ways to Thompson. Feminist critics may ask "Why would a both male and female profession receive both positive and negative feedback?"

(Rachel Kennedy)

There was astudy that showed that there are more people who watch male sports than people who watch female sports. I also had taken notice to the fact that more money is dumped into men's sports rather than money being dumped into things for women. As well as the clothing being a whole issue since in some sports the female uniform is skin tight when the male can wear loose clothing.

Miss Fury was the first ever female superhero. Additionally, "Miss Fury" was published in 1942 and the character appeared in her first Marvel comic in 2008. "Miss Fury" had 2 volumes and a limited edition comic. In the 1940's women were seen as weak and lesser than men. So, having a woman you can look up to that's strong, independent, and free was probably a game changer for younger women. Tarpé Mills changed the comic book world by breaking gender norms and showing young girls that they can save the day. "Miss Fury" was an inspiration for women everywhere!

In the series, Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) faces challenges and doubt from her rivals in chess. The majority of these players are men who originally doubt Beth of her skills because she is a woman. They are then stunned from her talent as a female chess player as she begins to rise in the ranks. This series shows a clear form of contrast between men and women and shows how men perceive women to be lacking skill in male dominated sports, which can be seen through any sport or activity in society today. "The Queen's Gambit" shows an authentic portrayal of feminism where feminism simply exists, as men and women are equal in all parts of society.

The Silence of the Lambs: Challenging Gender Stereotypes in a Male-Dominated Profession - Lincoln Frank

After re-watching the film over the weekend, I began to wonder how the portrayal of Clarice Starling in "The Silence of the Lambs" reinforced gender stereotypes and contributed to patriarchal power structures. Clarice is often contrasted with the male characters in the film, reinforcing traditional gender roles and expectations. Clarice is portrayed as emotional and vulnerable, whereas the male characters are portrayed as strong and unemotional. Additionally, the film reinforces the idea that women are primarily responsible for their own safety, as Clarice is warned by multiple male characters about the dangers of her job and told to tread carefully. However, Clarice's determination to succeed in a male-dominated profession challenges these gender norms and offers a positive representation of a strong and capable female character. She is able to use her intelligence and intuition to solve the case and ultimately outsmart the male villains. Clarice's character arc challenges gender stereotypes by proving that a woman can be just as competent and successful as her male colleagues. Overall, "The Silence of the Lambs" offers a complex portrayal of gender and power, highlighting both the ways in which women are oppressed and the ways in which they can resist and challenge these structures.

Throughout the Super Mario Bros series, Mario is often depicted as all of the games' noble hero as he attempts to save Princess Peach from the evil Bowser. However, there has rarely been an instance that Peach had to save Mario. Obviously, this is due to very prevalent gender stereotypes. Men are often seen as stronger and more courageous than women, and women are seen as more susceptible and in need of assistance from men. In the real world, this isn't the case, but throughout the video game universe, many developers use this ideology to create masculine heroes who are tasked with saving a feminine hostage.

In American society there are jobs, that stereotypically are known as "Women Jobs". According to the DOL (Department of Labor) the top three jobs that are known as "Women Jobs" are Nurses, Elementary and Middle School Teachers, and Secretaries. This is not to say that there are not men that also have these types of jobs, but most of the employees of these jobs are women. You might wonder why this is, and that is hard to answer. As I see it, from Bible times to now women have had the reputation of caring for people as one of their main jobs in life. I believe this idea has just stuck with American society. Another reason that I believe this is because the stereotype for men is we tend to be gruff, hard working, and know to have jobs that involve manual labor. Now this is not to say all men are like this, I know many men that have a heart of hospitality, and care for people. Women have the stereotype of being kind, caring, and a heart of servanthood. Same as the guy, not all women are like this I am just going by stereotypes. To conclude the main reason for the title of "Women Jobs" is due to stereotypes.

It's an elite Navy Seals position she earned but she also earned it over many men. It wasn't seen for a woman to be in the military let alone chosen for an elite position over the rest of the men because the military is tough. It is war and seen as a man's job. Many men in the movie aren't happy and make everything more difficult for her to achieve her goal.

Though television today tries to shed light on women's empowerment, traditional views on women are often still shown and expressed. Throughout the series, women are seen as prizes to be won, and often showcased this way as well. The show itself dates back to times when women were dressed up and taken to balls to acquire suitors, and then handed off to be married and bear children. The women in the series, particularly mothers, are seen keeping and running the house as primary caregivers, while the men work and keep affairs in order regarding their estates. When women in the show act in any way that is not "traditional" they are seen as strange and often rumors are spread through the town to try and ruin the family's name. This sheds light on the lack of freedom and expression that women had. "Bridgerton" portrays blatant sexist views during regal times, and how the roles of women were attempting to evolve and how they have.

The main character of the Twilight saga, Bella Swan, is often described as fragile and in need of male protection. Bella relies on her love interests, Jacob and Edward, to fight her battles for her. In the first book/movie, Bella cooks, cleans, and does housework constantly for her father. The author of the books, Stephanie Meyer, placed Bella under an old, outdated stereotype; women are meant to cook and clean for the men in their lives. Besides her stereotypical hobbies, her final decision to become a vampire with Edward is a surrender of a woman in love. Edward and Bella are not equal in their relationship. Once she becomes a vampire, she loses her bonds with her family and friends. Bella is depicted as an anti-feminist throughout the whole series and does not challenge gender roles, but instead gladly accepts them and does not wish to be independent.

Since the 90s, Fans and even wrestling promoters never took women wrestling as seriously as they did with men wrestling. The most popular company WWE had booked women is wrestling roles to only have 2 minute matches with no story compared to the men having 20-30 minute dramatic matches. Because they were never put into serious matches or stories, fans never took them seriously. Leading to fans treating their matches as a time to get up from their seats and take a break in the show and use the bathroom or buy merchandise. The women were not even called "wrestlers" in the company, instead they were called "divas", separating them from the wrestlers. In the past decade, women have been put in more serious and prominent roles. But because of their treatment prior it has been a hard battle to try and win fans over and make them interested. Women in wrestling have more supporters than they did in the 90s up to 2016.

Society does not provide the same opportunities for men and women, simply due to gender. The gender pay gap also takes into account race, as women of color earn often significantly less than both white men and women. The wage gap varies across the country, becoming more or less prominent depending on where you are. The wage gap causes women and their families, as well as the economy, to suffer. They have less money to support themselves and their families. The United States has a long way to go to end the wage gap.

In Beauty and the Beast, Belle ends up trapped in the Beast's castle and has to take care of herself and figure out how to escape. Throughout the movie Belle has to fight in the woods, try to escape the Beast's castle, and stand up against the entire town to get them to believe the Beast is good. Belle is not afraid to stand up to anyone and she even fights against one of the main dominant males Gaston. This goes against the steryotipical gender norms showing that women are strong, can stand up for themselves, and fight for what they want. (Emma Lunglhofer)

Many lego sets that are targeted toward girls are characters that come with coffee shops, purses, malls, and things that many would consider "girly". Take a look at the male lego sets, there are archaeologists, doctors, and police officers. These are all jobs that are considered unfeminine by the media and a "manly" thing. There are no woman shown in hospitals, dig sites, on motorcycles, or in law enforcement. Women need to be represented in more strong and hard work jobs. The importance of this is young girls are playing with these legos and they might want to be in one of these fields, yet they don't see someone like them represented in this field. Would you find this discouraging as a young girl? There needs to be powerful roles represented as women, if not, what are we teaching our children?

While mainly women aren't very common inside video games, some games are more inclusive. However, this representation is heavily sexualized for mostly a male audience. Take for an example Honkai Impact 3rd. This game's playable characters are only women. While at first this seems like a very positive thing, when you play the game you begin to notice how fetishized and sexualized the women are, even if they're minors. This sexualization can drive away people who identify as apart of the female side of the spectrum. And in some cases men will believe all women should be like this, which is very stereotypical and offensive to those identifying as a woman. However, in more recent games, less of this sexualized behavior is noticeable and women are still included in games.

The film "Up" starts off with a montage of the protagonist Mr. Fredricksen and his wife Ellie growing up and getting married. Throughout this montage, we watch their life story. We see them fixing up their house, picnicking on a hill, and attempting to have a baby. As they grow old and gray, Ellie dies and Mr. Fredricksen is left in his lonesome. After this sorrowful 5-minute opening to the film, no other female character is seen again in the movie. That means for over an hour of the film, there isn't one woman on screen. This leaves a negative representation of Pixar on the field of feminism.

While drawing a self-portrait over the past 2 weeks, I was reminded of Frida Kahlo. She was a Mexican artist born in 1907, and gradually changed gender norms. Through her art she depicted female issues and expressed her appearance that veered away from the general feminine look. Now, in that time period most of the artists were men, and because of Frida, young and older women had someone to look up to. This affected how women were viewed, the typical gender stereotypes, and Mexican norms as well.

Other cartoons represent female characters as stay at home moms or have them cooking dinner. Spongebob though represents female characters just as they represent male characters. For example, Sandy Cheeks is presented as a strong independent female squirrel. She is stronger than most of the male characters and often wins sports events throughout the show.

In Alice In Wonderland, Alice defies her social role as a damsel in distress by challenging feminist theory. In literature, a damsel in distress is a stereotype commonly used to narrate innocent and young women that women are waiting for salvation. In Alice in Wonderland, Alice does not require a hero as she herself fills the role. In the beginning of the movie, Alice is expected to be an obedient housewife to a lord in which everyone expects her to marry. It’s clear Alice doesn’t hold the same priorities other women in her time do. While her peers pressure her into considering her future as a wife, Alice busies herself with daydreaming about the impossible, for which she is heavily criticized. We see Alice’s assertiveness and curiosity as specifically “un-Victorian” peculiarities. These peculiarities are what lead her towards her heroic adventure of slaying the Jabberwocky, which assisted her to discover her destiny and saved Wonderland. Regardless of what society thinks or deems is correct, Alice simply does what she wants. For instance, Alice does not put on stockings and a corset for her engagement party, she denies what the community calls ‘proper’. Slaying the Jabberwocky empowered Alice to choose her own path in life and have her mind set on taking over her father’s business, revolutionizing it with her seemingly ‘mad’ ideas.
